Analysis manure

Cattle manure is much more popular due to simple calculations

21 March 2024 - Jesse Torringa

The spring weather is clearly reflected in the sales volumes of liquid manure this week. This applies to above the rivers, because below the rivers sales are not going well because it is wet. In addition, the interest in cattle slurry is much greater than fattening pig slurry. This mainly has to do with the calculation.

Manure sales are very variable in the Netherlands this week and vary further. In the center and north of the Netherlands, manure transporters and contractors are fairly busy with transport and spreading. Some indicate that they are driving towards their maximum capacity. "The trucks are almost all occupied at the moment. We can get going well and even at night we have a number of cars driving." let a fertilizer intermediary know. Contractors in the east of the country also indicate that they are finally getting started. It does not mean that liquid manure can be spread everywhere, on the contrary. It remains far too wet in many places. In addition, many plots do not exactly deserve the beauty prize and, given the result, it would sometimes have been better to wait.

Despite a reasonably nice spring week, a lot less has been done on the land in the south. Especially in the southeast, hardly anything has been driven out of the silos. It creates a division in the Netherlands, with the border approximately around the rivers. The reasonably good manure sales mean that DCA's collection contributions for liquid manure will decrease slightly in the center and north this week, while in the south there will even be an increase.

Cattle slurry much more popular
Manure intermediaries see that there is a particularly high demand for cattle slurry. Sales of pig slurry are a lot more difficult. This has to do with the calculation that many buyers do for manure, which involves looking at which manure yields the most at the bottom line. "If you choose pig slurry, you will reach your maximum levels faster than with cattle slurry. The prices are much closer this year, the ratio between the two that we normally have is missing this season," explains a fertilizer intermediary. For this reason, there remains a considerable amount of pressure on pig slurry and this decreases somewhat in the case of cattle slurry.

These vicissitudes together ensure that the changes in collection contributions vary greatly this week. It is clear that the price of cattle slurry has certainly dropped somewhat compared to the start of the season, while pig slurry has dropped less. Cattle slurry averages between €28 and €30 per cubic meter. Pig slurry costs between €30 and €33 per cubic meter. For both, charging is also charged at slightly higher or lower prices, depending on the region. With the weather forecast in the coming days being much less favorable for the spreading season, it remains to be seen whether this trend will continue. Manure intermediaries see that a considerable volume of manure has now been sold, but the supply remains high and oppressive.
