Rouveen Cheese Specialties records fractionally lower turnover

28 May 2024 - Klaas van der Horst

Rouveen Cheese Specialties has booked a fraction less turnover for 2023 than for 2022, despite sharply decreased dairy prices. Despite a lower milk price, there was extra money for additional payments for members.

This is evident from the filed annual report of the cooperative company. The company works with a large number of different milk flows, including goat's and sheep's milk, but mainly receives cow's milk from its own members, both conventional and organic. A large number of different cheeses are made from the processed milk, often on behalf of customers.

Less turnover, more expensive cheese
The annual report does not mention the total volume of milk processed, only that turnover decreased by €2022 million from 2023 to 1,9 to €234,8 million. The largest part of this - almost €179 million - was accounted for by cheese. In 2023, approximately 250.000 fewer kilos were made, but at a price that was on average 4,3 cents higher: €6,087. The average sales price indicates that Rouveen makes cheeses for the higher segment of the market.

However, not all milk was used for cheese production. In 2023, 74 million kilos were resold, more than 25 million kilos more than the previous year. This milk yielded much less per kilo than in 2022, which is not surprising given the market. It was the same with cream and whey.

Higher subsequent payment, more reserve
Rouveen Cheese Specialties does not publish milk prices, but annually pays an above-average price compared to other cheese makers. The slightly lower milk price last year was partly compensated by a slightly higher additional payment. About €550.000 more was available for this. Although turnover fell slightly last year and the balance sheet value also decreased slightly, the company managed to increase its equity considerably. This increased from more than 55% to 60% of the balance sheet value.
