The extreme weather conditions in which a lot of rain fell in a short period of time resulted in puddles on the land and a soaking wet soil in recent weeks. Those who have yet to sow their corn will see their plans fall through and the sowing date be postponed even further.
To prevent yield losses due to a shorter growing season, or at least to limit them as much as possible, it is more important than ever to make good decisions from the start of sowing until harvest. This starts with the choice of very early varieties with an FAO up to 210. Because these varieties require fewer growing days, they mature well in a shorter time.
However, it doesn't stop here. Make sure that the crop is properly monitored during the season, in the various growth stages, and that weeds and damage are recognized and treated in a timely manner. The 'Weed Recognition' and the 'Damage Image Recognizer' tools in your myKWS account can help you with this. If you have to decide to over-sow due to poor conditions, the KWS Corn Seed Service – which in this case offers a 50% discount on selected varieties – offers a solution!
weed control
Simply leaving weeds alone is not an option, because in this case the weed plant will compete with the corn plant and withdraw moisture and nutrients from the soil, resulting in less nutrition for the corn plant. Corn plants can also become overgrown as a result of heavy weed pressure and literally and figuratively end up in the shade. The lack of light and nutritional deficiency will lead to lower yield and nutritional value. Timely and correct weed control in maize is therefore extremely important.
Weed control carried out between the third and fifth leaf stages normally gives the best results. The weeds present on the plot are still in a relatively young stage, so a somewhat lower dosage of the weedkiller is often sufficient. Moreover, spraying at this stage prevents possible growth inhibition of the maize crop as much as possible.

Recognizing damage
The wet spring has given the snail population an enormous boost, which causes problems in various crops, including corn. Whether it concerns snail damage, emergence problems or pests in cultivation, it is always essential to detect damage in a timely manner. This makes it possible to anticipate this at an early stage, before the damage leads to irreversible consequences.
The myKWS Damage Image Recognizer can be of assistance here. This practical tool provides a comprehensive overview of the most important damage patterns in maize, so that you can quickly recognize them. After selecting a development phase, you will receive an overview of the various possible damages that can occur in this growth phase. The tool shows a description, damage thresholds and advice on what measures can best be taken to prevent the damage or disease in question.
