Beer spent grain catches the eye on the feed market

6 August 2024 - Alex Jurvillier

The current growing weather with lots of sun can boost the development of meadow hay and silage maize, among other things. What this means for the supply on the roughage market is still unclear. What is striking is the price of spent grain.

The price of spent grain continues to increase. This mainly has to do with the supply. According to the trade, this does not mean anything, which could lead to higher prices in the long term. It is estimated that this offer probably cannot cover everyone. In order to bring the market more into balance, higher volumes are actually required from the breweries. This week's DCA Indicative Price takes another step up and is €3,30 per percent dry matter.

In wheat straw we are in the transition to the price of the new harvest, which is now gradually coming onto the market. This concerns straw of French or German origin. Traders speak of a relatively low yield. Not only is less straw expected in the Netherlands, but there also appears to be less available in France. As a result, there are signals in the market that straw from Denmark is being looked at.

To talk now about a coming shortage of straw on the market is generally considered a bit too simplistic by the trade. There should be more insight into this in the coming weeks. The DCA Indicative Price for the new harvest of wheat straw starts at €135 per tonne. Equal to the new harvest price of barley straw that has been on the market for a while. The supply of barley straw on the market seems somewhat diffuse. Some traders speak of relatively little supply, but others expect sufficient barley straw to be available.

One of the roughages that benefits from the extra hours of sunshine is meadow hay. The extra hours of sunshine allow the grass to grow quickly and the hay to dry quickly. It can therefore be removed from the land without any problems. yet the range is not mentioned as wide. One trader even indicates that it is not easy to obtain. The DCA Indication Price remains the same at €190 per tonne, new harvest price.

Changing mood in silage maize
When it comes to silage maize, the mood is variable. According to one trader, the price may drop slightly due to the growing weather, while another trader maintains lower harvest expectations due to the previous challenges with rain in the growing season. So it remains to be seen which way the penny falls and whether the current growing weather has been able to give the silage maize a boost. For now, the DCA Indicative Price remains the same at €95 per tonne.

In grass seed hay the situation with little supply has remained unchanged. The DCA Indicative Price remains at €185 per tonne. The same applies to silage grass: also unchanged and little trade. The DCA Indicative Price also remains the same at €90 per tonne. Feed potatoes also remain stable at €60 per tonne.
