Belgian dairy cooperatives in neck-and-neck race

21 August 2024 - Klaas van der Horst

The Belgian dairy cooperative Milcobel has increased the milk price for August by an almost as large step as the Walloon competitor LDA did earlier this week with the milk price for July. The Belgian dairy market is no longer a purely Belgian toy, but the two 'native' cooperatives keep a close eye on each other.

Milcobel has increased the milk price at legal Belgian contents by 75 cents to €43,50 per 100 liters. At realistic levels (43 grams of fat/35 grams of protein) and maximum surcharges, members can receive up to €47,92 per 100 liters, Milcobel reports.

Under comparable conditions (1,3 million liters per year and real contents), Milcobel will pay out €47,40 per 100 liters for August. This does not include a sustainability surcharge of €1,00.

With the basic price mentioned, Milcobel is above Arla, but below that of the other competitors, as shown the Belgian Milk Price Comparator van Boerenbusiness.

LDA will not announce a milk price for August until a month later. The company has just determined the milk price for July. Coincidentally, this was also with a ratio of 75 cents at legal levels, but LDA does pay a slightly higher milk price for July than Milcobel.

This is still being closely monitored in the Belgian market, although it is a different month and there are also other players on the market.
