Buyers and sellers of corn have difficulty meeting each other

8 October 2024 - Alex Jurvillier

With the rain that was forecast for this week, things seem to be going quite smoothly. For the corn harvest, that is downright favorable. However, the trade in corn is not going very smoothly. Buyers and sellers are having difficulty agreeing on the price. Products that can be used as a cover over the pit, on the other hand, are easily sold. Furthermore, the market is reasonably stable. That is also normal for this time of year.

The trade in covering products is going well. There is a healthy demand for steam peels and potato fibres. If we stay in the potato corner, it is noticeable that feed potatoes are difficult to obtain. Sporadically a few bins and that is where it stops a bit according to traders. The DCA Indicative Price for feed potatoes remains stable at €50 per tonne.

According to various suppliers, brewers' grains are under some pressure. There is sufficient supply and it is not the case that customers need to be found, but it is important to keep the price in line with other residual flows, as some traders indicate. The DCA Indicative Price for brewers' grains is taking a step back to €3,45 per percent dry matter.

Corn stays at the price
Silage maize is a difficult market. Prices for maize on the stem range from around €1.800 to €2.500 per hectare, just like last week. That is a range that neither buyer nor seller can do much with. It all depends on the condition of the maize. For chopped maize from the new harvest, the DCA Indicative Price remains at €70 per tonne. Availability of maize is one thing, but you also need someone who wants to buy it. Livestock farmers are not yet overflowing with enthusiasm to buy at this price level, according to several traders. It is a major drain on liquidity and they have to be willing and able to provide that. Prices of around €90 per tonne are mentioned for maize that can be fed directly from the previous harvest. Large volumes of this are being traded. According to insiders, only farmers who have to bridge the gap are on the market for it.

There is not much trade in hay and straw. Lovers of meadow and grass seed hay have a stock and are hardly at the market now. The DCA Indicative Price for meadow hay is €195 per tonne and for grass seed hay €190 per tonne. It is not the busiest time for straw either. According to various forage traders, falling straw prices are not yet in the cards. It is just a slow process. The DCA Indicative Price for both wheat and barley straw remains stable at €170 per tonne.

There is also not much trade in silage grass. For a late harvested autumn cut, the price is around €65 per ton. For good grass that is suitable for dairy cows or goats, on which we base the indication, prices are a lot higher. The DCA Indicative price for silage grass remains stable at €85 per ton.
