A-ware increases 'Better for' premium to 6 euros

11 October 2024 - Wouter Baan - 1 reaction

A-ware is increasing the premium for the Better for Nature & Farmer program to €6 per 100 kilos of milk from next year. The dairy group also says that there is room for serious growth within the milk flow that is exclusively for Albert Heijn. The higher premium is offset by further steps in the field of nature and animal welfare.

The plans were presented yesterday (10 October) by A-ware and Albert Heijn to the current dairy farmers participating in the Beter voor programme. According to A-ware, the further steps that are being taken are focused on three main issues. For example, animal welfare will be further safeguarded with more focus on claw health. The cows of participants will be checked externally several times a year, with the results being recorded in the so-called 'Mobility score'.

In collaboration with research institute Naturalis, it is being mapped out how biodiversity in dairy farming can be increased. For this purpose, the - by their own admission already minimal - use of crop protection products will be recorded. The aim is to minimize this even further.

The program also focuses on carbon sequestration in the soil. From 2025, measurements will be taken again at the participating dairy farms. The plans have been submitted to the Better for Nature & Farmer Foundation. They still have to agree to this.

Room for growth
In return for the extra efforts, the premium that dairy farmers receive will be increased from €5 to €6. In addition, according to A-ware, there is serious room for additional dairy farmers in the demand-driven chain, although they do not want to release any concrete growth targets. "The primary goal is to initially fill this in with our own dairy farmers", says COO Klaas de Jong. According to A-ware, the current participants are satisfied with the further development and the increase in the premium.

In 2018, A-ware and Albert Heijn started the Better for program with a premium of €3 per 100 kilos of milk. In 2021, this was increased to €5 per 100 kilos and from next year to €6 per 100 kilos.
