A group of members of the Cono cooperative are looking into switching to another processor. The reason is that they feel that the milk price of their current cooperative is lagging behind.
The group of dissatisfied members is not very large, about 10 members, but with a large pool of milk of about 50 million kilos on an annual basis. This represents more than 11% of the milk pool that Cono had last year. Partly for that reason, a possible departure is sensitive.
Cono has not always been the highest milk price in the Netherlands, partly because other processors introduced new milk flows with extra high surcharges. Branded cheeses also had a harder time maintaining their position for a while. However, Cono is also working hard to fight back.
The cheesemaker believes that she can currently keep up with the paid milk price. General manager Jerry Griep therefore finds it very unfortunate and unnecessary that the group of members is now coming out. He does not want to say much more about the difference of opinion with the group, but states that the matter will certainly be discussed extensively at the members' meeting of 12 and 13 November.
