Monthly milk supplies in Ireland exceeded last year's levels for the first time in 2024 in September, according to the latest figures published by Eurostat.
Milk supply in September was 792.420 tonnes, higher than last year's 786.370 tonnes. This brings the total milk supply in 2024 to 7.189.060 tonnes so far. In the same period last year up to and including September, milk supply was 7.499.000 tonnes. This is still a significant decrease, but the backlog may be further reduced.
Noel Murphy of the ICMSA (Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association) told Irish Agriland that the weather conditions in Ireland in the autumn have been favourable for dairy farmers. In addition, the higher milk prices are said to encourage farmers to produce more milk. The situation for farmers is said to be better now than in the spring and summer. The ICMSA emphasises that the cooperatives must also pass on the higher prices they receive to the dairy farmers.
