The shrinkage of the Dutch milk supply is getting smaller compared to a year ago. Due to a considerably higher fat content in the milk, the difference is in reality almost negligible.
In October, the Dutch milk supply amounted to 1.095.936 tons, according to figures from RVO. This is a decrease of 1,62% compared to a year earlier. This means that the gap compared to last year is getting smaller. In August, the gap was still at least 4%; a month later, this had dropped to 2,66%.
It should be noted that the Dutch milk supply dropped considerably last autumn. The supply in litres is still tight and the lowest in October since 2021.
Higher fat content
Due to a higher fat content in the milk (4,54% versus 4,48% in 2023), the difference in ingredients is even smaller. At 49.760 tonnes, fat production in October was only 0,39% below last year's level.
Average daily production was 35.352 tonnes last month, compared to 35.491 tonnes a month earlier. The seasonal decline in milk production usually continues until November. Over the first ten months of October, Dutch milk supply was 11.460.029 tonnes, 1,95% below the level of the same period a year earlier. This suggests that Dutch milk supply is heading for a decline this year.
