FrieslandCampina introduces new German allowance

3 December 2024 - Klaas van der Horst

rieslandCampina also wants to be able to reward the German members of the cooperative extra for milk that meets the conditions of the German animal welfare scheme Haltungsform, Stufe 3, it reports when asked. A-ware and DOC Kaas have already set up specific milk flows for this, with their own premiums. The program is already active at A-ware, at DOC Kaas it will apply from 1 January 2025.

A-ware has developed the Koebewust program for this purpose, while DOC Kaas is introducing a similar program as of January 1. FrieslandCampina wants to offer a bonus as of January, but this is dependent on a decision by the members' council in December. The proposal is that German members who meet the conditions of QM++, an extension of the German milk quality management system QM-Milch, will receive a bonus of €1,30 per 100 kilos of milk via Foqus Planet Sustainable Development. This is comparable to the bonus for full pasture grazing, although pasture grazing is not mandatory for HSF3.

Deferred entry fee
The demand for HSF3 dairy in Germany is currently being met by FrieslandCampina from the Netherlands, via the existing milk flow VLOG-ProWeideland. This meets the requirements of Haltungsform. According to the plan, the inclusion of HSF3 milk in Foqus Planet and the associated reward only applies to German members, because the demand only comes from the German market. The same rules will apply to new members in Germany that FrieslandCampina recruits. The cooperative hopes to attract new members with the promise that no entry fee has to be paid until 1 July 2026. However, this is a postponement and not a cancellation of payment.

Premiums from other processors
DOC Kaas has a separate program for HSF3 milk in which participants are included in a specific milk flow. They receive a premium of €3 per 100 kilos of milk. At A-ware, the Koebewust program was set up at the beginning of this year, in which participants receive a premium of €4,00 per 100 kilos of milk. This amount includes a sustainability premium. Other dairy processors have not yet announced information about their approach for the German market.
