Rising milk price boosts Polish milk supply

10 December 2024 - Wouter Baan

Milk production in Poland has increased further in October compared to 2023. Higher milk prices are a stimulating factor here. However, the bluetongue virus is increasingly a concern, now that the virus has been detected for the second time.

Milk supply in Poland amounted to 1,079 million tonnes in October. Compared to the same month a year earlier, this is a 3,3% lead and more than 4,5% compared to the five-year average. Compared to a month earlier, the percentage lead has also increased somewhat. This is probably because milk prices in Poland are on the rise and have risen to over €50 per 100 kilos, according to data from the Polish Statistics Service.

Bluetongue
Meanwhile, the bluetongue virus (serotype 3) has also been detected in Poland. The disease was first detected at the end of November on a beef cattle farm and yesterday (December 9) the virus was detected for the second time. This time on a dairy farm in the Pyrzyce district, more than 300 kilometers from where the virus was first detected. Surrounding countries such as Ukraine have now imposed a ban on the import of cattle from Poland.

Lots of potential
In August, Polish milk supply was higher than the supply volume in our country, but in September and October, Dutch supply was higher again, Eurostat data shows. However, the potential of Polish milk production is such that it will soon take over the position as the third largest dairy producer in Europe, after Germany and France. The average milk production per cow in Poland was 2023 kilos in 9.125, which means that the growth potential is theoretically large.

In addition, it is estimated that in Poland only 85% of the milk produced is sold to professional dairy producers, while the average in the EU is almost 95%. Since Eurostat only registers the collected milk, the actual Polish milk production is most likely already higher than in our country.
