Trade in by-products aims to run smoothly

10 December 2024 - Alex Jurvillier

The roughage trade is supposedly going well for the time of year. Buyers are somewhat hesitant with roughage such as straw and silage grass. By-products ranging from pressed pulp to brewers' grains and potato press fibre are easily finding a buyer.

The DCA Indicative Price for brewers' grains remains the same at €3,65 per percent dry matter. The market is becoming a bit tight. According to some suppliers, this is because a stock is being built up in the run-up to the planned winter breaks of the breweries. You want to keep the regular suppliers who are buyers even when you have to peddle brewers' grains, as some traders indicate.

The DCA Indicative price of straw remains the same at €175 per tonne. Trade is going quite well for this time of year, but it is all still manageable. According to traders, quickly ordering a few extra loads so that they can still participate in the current financial year is not an option. The supply is there, but sellers have considerable amounts in mind. Incidentally, it does not seem likely that the straw price will rise much in the short term. There is insufficient demand for that.

The DCA Indicative Price for silage maize remains the same at €85 per ton. This concerns maize from the silage, whether or not from the 2023 harvest. The trade in maize is not very busy, but that is logical so relatively soon after the harvest. And although it is already December, there is still a sporadically fixed corner. "You should no longer want maize from the field that is still available now", according to a trader.

The DCA Indicative Price for feed potatoes remains the same at €50 per ton. The trade is not very busy but according to some insiders there is a bit more supply compared to last year. The market is certainly not overfed but they are available.

The DCA Indicative Price of grass seed hay remains the same at €180 per ton. With the remark that there is little to no trade in it. The supply is and remains tight and grass seed hay is really a product for the enthusiast. The DCA Indicative Price for meadow hay remains the same this week at €195 per ton. The market is called calm.

The DCA Indicative Price for silage grass remains the same at €80 per tonne. The market is said to be calm. Last year was a reasonably good grass year and traders notice that the roughage position on many companies is slightly more spacious. This has the advantage that it is slightly easier to buy grass for regular customers.
