ZuivelNL predicts only slightly less milk in 2025

11 December 2024 - Klaas van der Horst

The Dutch milk supply will only fall slightly further in 2025 than it did this year. Despite the buyout of dairy farmers, the reduction of the dairy herd and the forced reduction of manure production.

In any case, this is what ZuivelNL takes into account in the budget for 2025. This was established during the general meeting held on Tuesday.

No definitive supply figures are yet known for 2024, but according to ZuivelNL, Dutch milk supply is expected to fall by approximately 2,1% this year compared to 2023. The main causes are the impact of infections with the bluetongue virus and the phasing out of the derogation.

In the coming years, the development of the Dutch milk pool is expected to decrease further by ZuivelNL. According to ZuivelNL, it is not yet entirely certain which policy the new Schoof cabinet wants to implement. The new government does have a more positive attitude towards the agricultural sector, but according to ZuivelNL, that does not say it all.

Therefore, a further reduction of the derogation and a reduction of the livestock population are expected, which means that the milk supply in 2025 is estimated to be slightly lower than for this year. ZuivelNL assumes a reduction of -2,5%, which would amount to approximately 290 million kilos. In the dairy farming sector, this is estimated as very positive.

A larger reduction in milk supply would also have more drastic consequences for the budget of ZuivelNL. With a 2,5% reduction, approximately €160.000 less in contributions will be received. That has relatively little impact. Larger reductions tick away more.
