Oceania and US flag dairy dumping in Canada

22 January 2025 - Klaas van der Horst

New Zealand, Australia and the US accuse Canada of dumping products on the world market. According to them, this is possible because Canadian exporters can easily get extra cheap dairy raw materials and they cannot.

The dairy industry in the first-mentioned countries claims to have been suffering from unfair trade practices for a long time, but has been unable to do much about it so far. Canada can also sell competitively again thanks to cheap purchasing. The bone of contention for the complainants is the Canadian export of what they claim is artificially reduced protein concentrate. The American dairy industry has complained about this many times before.

The issue has been raised via the New Zealand dairy association DCANZ, which hopes that the publication will also attract the attention of the new American administration at this time.
Canada has a relatively high level of protection for its own dairy industry. Dairy in the other three countries is less protected, although the US also has high import barriers and supports its own dairy with minimum prices, among other things.
