A decrease in cell count by BeddingFX

Jan Paul is a dairy farmer with 120 dairy cows in Scharwoude, North Holland. He has been in partnership with his second father for ten years and will take over the company in the future. Then he would like to expand to 140 dairy cows and start milking with milking robots. Early 2024, Paul made the switch from wheat straw pellets to the Mountain grains Pro in combination with BeddingFX® (clay minerals). "Since then I have seen my cell count and mastitis cases decrease," says Paul.

In the past, Paul always used chopped straw, but because of his own dust allergy, he started looking for a different type of litter for the cubicles. He ended up with wheat straw pellets. Paul was satisfied with these, but when they were difficult to supply due to the ongoing poor straw harvest, he had to look for an alternative. At the Cattle and Mechanization Trade Fair in Gorinchem in 2023, he spoke with sales specialist Evert Rozendaal from Berg and learned more about the different pelleted stable litters. Paul first tried the oat pellets. Paul: "Despite the fact that the oat pellets stayed in place well, the cows ate them too much, which resulted in litter being lost." On Berg's advice, he switched to Bergkorrels Pro in combination with BeddingFX® in February 2024.

Fewer cases of mastitis and a lower cell count
Since Paul switched from wheat straw pellets to Bergkorrels Pro in combination with BeddingFX®, he has had significantly fewer mastitis cases and has seen a downward trend in his cell count. At the first measurement in December, he even had a cell count of 99. "I have never had a cell count below 100 before! This shows me that BeddingFX in combination with Bergkorrels Pro has the desired effect," says Paul.

Paul says he is satisfied with the litter. "It stays in place well, which means that little litter is lost. The boxes are also drier." Another advantage he mentions is that the Bergkorrels Pro provide a softer bedding than wheat or oat pellets. "With the other pellets, I sometimes saw holes in the cow's skin, but I don't see that anymore." The bedding is also easy; the BeddingFX® is spread over the pellets with a wheelbarrow and shovel.
