German cooperatives pay the best milk price in the EU

3 February 2025 - Klaas van der Horst

German cooperatives DMK and Hochwald Foods score high when it comes to paid milk money in 2024. Both are on a 12-month average that is the highest in Europe. This is evident from the latest edition of the monthly milk price comparison of the European Dairy Farmers (EDF).

This is evident from the latest edition of the monthly milk price comparison of the European Dairy Farmers (EDF), as also published on the website of ZuivelNL.

It doesn't always work like this. Last year, the Spanish Capsa Foods and the Finnish Valio came out as the best payers. For the German DMK, the result is a nice boost, because in many previous years this cooperative was not exactly in the front row when it comes to paid milk money.

The EDF comparison does not yet provide a complete overview of the performance over 2024, because a supplementary payment has not yet been included in all cases, such as in the case of FrieslandCampina and also of the two frontrunners themselves. However, the supplementary payment over 2023 has been included, and that is not entirely illogical, because the supplementary payment over 2023 is usually not paid out until 2024. DMK pays an average milk price of €48,64 per 100 kilos, Hochwald pays out €48,38.

FrieslandCampina in 3rd place
FrieslandCampina currently occupies third place with €48,03 per 100 kilos, after DMK and Hochwald. This cooperative will soon announce the results for 2024 and it will also become clear how the additional payment will work out. It is certain that there will be an additional payment in any case. The amount will be announced soon.

The stragglers of 2024 can be found in Great Britain and France. In Great Britain, it is Saputo/Dairy Crest in southern England. This company pays an average of only €44,25 per 100 kilos. The fact that this company is not doing very well is also evident from the fact that it recently terminated the contract with a number of farmers. The other straggler is Lactalis Val de Loire (in the south-west of France), with a payout price of €44,92 per 100 kilos.

Incidentally, all the companies mentioned are not necessarily the highest or lowest payers in their own country, but have been selected by EDF as representative companies for milk price developments in their country.
