Dairy company Emmi achieved a record result last year, with a strong improvement in profit in particular. The goat milk activities contributed significantly to the good result, although there were other factors as well.
Turnover rose from the equivalent of €4.517 million to €4.630 million. Net profit rose from €198,4 million to €234,6 million. Emmi did not achieve any particularly special results on its Swiss home market, although this market accounts for almost half of turnover. There is little growth in this market and not much change is expected for next year either. Emmi's most important markets are Europe and North and South America. In terms of segments, Emmi sees growth opportunities mainly in coffee, desserts and goat's milk products.
The latter involves the Netherlands, although Emmi also has goat dairy activities in the United States and Switzerland. In the Netherlands, goat milk powder was the main success, with sales of which grew by 26,3% last year, according to the annual report. These powders are produced in Etten-Leur, but Emmi is also active in the powder trade. Fresh goat cheese, which is also produced in Etten-Leur, also scored well with sales growth of 10,9%.
The total volume of goat milk that Emmi processes is not very large. Last year it was 99 million kilos for the entire group. Compared to 1,9 billion kilos of cow's milk this seems like a drop in the ocean, but the margin on the product is good.
The European division achieved a total turnover growth of 5% last year. This is well above the group average. Management in Lucerne does not venture a firm forecast for this year, but expects growth in both Europe and for the company as a whole to be somewhat lower.
