The Dutch market remains the fifth largest market in terms of turnover for dairy giant Arla. Last year, Arla achieved a turnover of €885 million. The company also saw the market share of its products in the Netherlands grow strongly last year, the company reports in its annual report for 2024.
Scandinavian Arla has a strong position in the Dutch retail sector with dairy products under the Arla and Melkunie brands. In addition, the company also produces dairy under its own brand for Dutch supermarkets. According to Arla, the Melkunie brand received a strong boost last year because the milk for it was produced according to the requirements of the 'Better for' programme. This is the programme that was launched on the Dutch market by A-ware and Albert Heijn and is now housed with an independent foundation.
Arla serves the Dutch market largely from its production company in Nijkerk. There it receives its own milk as well as milk from Eko-Holland, among others. This flow is important for Arla's organic (fresh) dairy products, with which it is the market leader in the Netherlands.
Arla's largest market is the United Kingdom, followed by Sweden, Germany and Denmark. According to Arla, turnover on the Dutch, Belgian and French markets rose by 10,7% last year. The dairy company collects a total of around 790 million litres of milk in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. That is 8 million kilos less than in 2023. This milk comes from 721 members in the countries mentioned.
