The Stichting Milieukeur (SMK) sees that dairy farmers who participate in the program 'On the way to PlanetProof' are making good progress towards the sustainability goals for 2030. They are ahead of the basic standards for sustainability. SMK, on the other hand, has no data on the economic performance of the participating farmers.
The report is the first impact analysis of the program and looks back over the period from 2021 to 2023. It appears that the participants on average perform considerably better than the set basic standards for a series of benchmarks. For example, a considerable area of herb-rich grassland (largely extensive) has been added (9,9%, almost the target of 10% in 2030) and a high percentage (61,4%) of protein from our own land is fed. The percentage of permanent grassland (75%) is approaching the intermediate target for 2030 (80%). Fewer and fewer greenhouse gases are being emitted (902 g/kg measured milk compared to the basic standard of 1.020 g/kg measured milk). Ammonia emissions are 51 kg/ha, with an intermediate target of 38 kg/ha in 2030. The lifespan of dairy cattle (6 years and 6 months) is above the basic standard (5 years and 4 months) and approaches the intermediate target of 7 years. Monitoring data of milk production and livestock density per hectare show that the production intensity of On the way to PlanetProof participants is almost as high as the Dutch average. The biggest challenges still lie with the nature and landscape targets and with the emissions per kilo of measured milk.
The results of the analysis are an average of the results of 562 dairy farmers. They are the stable group over a series of 3 years. On an annual basis there are more participants, but there are also dropouts and (re)entrants.
The analysis does not make any statements about the economic results of the group of PlanetProof farmers. SMK reports when asked that this is not part of its tasks.
