DCA Market Intelligence launches Milk Price Index

6 March 2025 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

DCA Market Intelligence introduces the DCA Basis Melkprijs Index NL. This is a new, objective benchmark that provides insight into the basic milk prices that dairy processors pay to dairy farmers in the Netherlands. This monthly index enables professionals in the dairy sector to better monitor market developments in various links in the chain.

As a Price Reporting Agency (PRA), DCA Market Intelligence provides the food and agribusiness with independent benchmark prices, market data and market information. DCA Basic Milk Price Index NL is calculated as the weighted average of the basic milk prices of eight leading Dutch dairy processors. The index is based on these prices for farm milk, excluding allowances and premiums for grazing and other sustainable goals, and is published as soon as a milk price for the month in question has been linked to at least 75% of the milk production concerned. As soon as all eight milk prices of the dairy processors are known, the Index is definitively determined for that month.

The monthly milk prices of the dairy companies are standardized and made comparable in accordance with a uniform protocol in the Dutch Milk price calculator that DCA Market Intelligence has been compiling for 16 years. This comparator is published on the so-called DCA MI Dairy Platform and on the website Boerenbusiness. Nl.

Trend in payout capacity
"With the Basis Melkprijs Index NL we offer a unique tool that provides insight into the development of the average basic milk price that dairy farmers receive," says Eric de Lijster, Head of PRA, of DCA Market Intelligence. "In it we indicate the trend in the payment capacity of the dairy industry. We emphasize that this is a basic price, because dairy farmers receive the necessary allowances and premiums from their customers, by meeting various sustainable goals such as grazing and nature management."

The course of the Basic Milk Price Index NL, which has been calculated back to 2018, shows that the Index has fallen slightly in recent months. The provisional DCA Basic Milk Price Index NL for March 2025 amounts to €53,00 per 100 kilos of milk. This decline follows an upward trend in the second half of 2024. "The DCA dairy quotations for North-West Europe have risen for a considerable period of time in the past year due to good demand for dairy and a shortage in the availability of the raw material milk. There has been more relaxation in this recently," De Lijster explains.
