Farm work attracts more than the forage trade

11 March 2025 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

With a beautiful sunny weekend behind us, it seems as if livestock farmers are also thinking a bit about spring. Driving manure, spreading artificial fertilizer and dragging the pasture are priorities. In the forage trade, regular work continues but it is otherwise fairly quiet.

Straw is and remains well priced. The supply of what is in the barns is not excessively large and it will of course take until July/August before straw from the new harvest becomes available. Incidentally, it is quite necessary to obtain straw from Spain or Denmark, for example, but transport makes it expensive. The DCA Indicative Price for straw this week is €185 per tonne. There is limited trade in meadow and grass seed hay. The DCA Indicative Price for meadow hay has remained the same at €190 per tonne and for grass seed hay at €170 per tonne. Grass seed hay appears to be somewhat more available than previously estimated. Some arable farmers want to empty the barn and are now offering grass seed hay, according to a trader.

In the solid by-products, a pause is being made this week. There is sufficient supply of brewers' grains, but for what becomes available, a customer can be found quickly. The DCA Indicative Price for brewers' grains remains unchanged at €3,45 per percent dry matter. The supply of feed potatoes remains tight. What is not suitable for chips goes to flakes and little is spilled from the potato processing industry. The DCA Indicative Price for feed potatoes remains the same at €50 per tonne.

Silage is only offered to a limited extent and there is also little demand. Riding schools remain on the market for bales and more intensive livestock farmers who always buy extra are now also doing so. There are now hardly any livestock farmers who still have to buy something after a mediocre grass year until the first cut, as we have seen in recent years after dry summers. The DCA Indicative Price remains unchanged at €80 per tonne.

With silage maize it has also been busier around this time according to traders. It is certainly not the case that nothing is happening, but it is generally somewhat smaller lots that are traded. The DCA Indicative Price this week comes out at €85 per ton.
