New cases of FMD have been reported in both Hungary and Slovakia. They are located northwest of the previous outbreaks, along the Danube. According to the reports, they are still cattle farms.
In Slovakia, after the first three outbreaks in the region of Dunajska Streda declared a state of emergency. This week, a fourth infected company was found in the same area.
Hungary did not escape a further outbreak either. This was reported in the municipality of Levèl (top left on the map), just 10 kilometres from the Austrian border. In Austria, surveillance and monitoring zones were therefore set up in response to the news, including further restrictions on transport.
A clean-up operation is underway, but authorities on both sides of the border remain on high alert, fearing the virus could spread further through the air.
