Russian milk production this year could be up to 1 percent lower than last year, when 26,3 million tons of milk were supplied, according to Artem Belov, chairman of the Soyuzmoloko union of milk producers.
Belov estimates that milk production will be slightly lower this year, but he does not indicate what his expectation is based on.
The total milk production in Russia, including for domestic use, is estimated by Soyuzmoloko at 34,1 million tonnes. Russian media meanwhile report that the import of dairy products is increasing. Particularly butter and cottage cheese. The latter product is imported mainly from Belarus. Since the beginning of this year, this would amount to 16.600 tonnes, as reported on the basis of the veterinary import register VetIs.
The quantity of butter imported is more limited and amounts to about 3.000 tons, of which 1.000 tons comes from Uruguay and 2.000 tons from Iran and Argentina. This butter is mainly intended for the big cities, where there is both more scarcity and more purchasing power.
