Buyers from South-East Asia in particular have driven up prices at the latest GDT dairy auction. The auction index rose by 4,6%. The average price of whole milk powder rose by 6,2% and is therefore almost a quarter more expensive than last year at the same time. Milk fat is rising more calmly in price, but is breaking historical records.
Analysts in New Zealand attribute the high prices to a combination of relatively limited supply and the import tariff war unleashed by US President Trump.
Another high flyer at the May 6 auction is cheddar, which rose 12% in price and thus shows a completely different development than mozzarella. This type of cheese was the only faller at the auction and dropped 0,5% in price.
Butter is also among the 'laggards' with a price increase of 3,8%, but at almost $8.000 per tonne it has never been as expensive as it is now. The same goes for butter oil, which rose in price by 5,4%.
