A bit calmer than last week, but again the dairy market is rising this week. It is also the semi-finished products – skimmed milk concentrate and cream – that are leading the price increase. Although the mozzarella quotation is also rising quite strongly.
This is evident from the quotations for (the shortened) week 22, which DCA Market Intelligence has determined. The quotation for skimmed milk concentrate has risen by more than 7% this week, which is much less than the 12% of last week, but nevertheless represents a significant jump.

This makes the price for the production of skimmed milk powder very narrow, especially since the quotation for skimmed milk powder remains virtually stable.
Amounts versus percentages
The increasing quotations for cream and butter are more noticeable, because they involve larger amounts, but in percentage terms they are smaller than for concentrate. The cream quotation increases by 2,85%, the butter quotation follows slightly behind with 2,2%.
The markets for bulk milk and whey powders are relatively quiet again. Last week there seemed to be some extra movement in skimmed milk powders, but the expectation that there would finally be a slightly longer lasting upward movement was quickly suppressed.

The market for regular whey powders is even under a bit more pressure, while the market for higher whey powders is also having a bit more trouble, something that is not reflected in the DCA quotations. The pressure for higher whey powders comes mainly from cheaper American imports.
Cheddar comes in last
The cheese market shows a mixed picture again. The demand for mozzarella is picking up nicely. The DCA quotation even goes up by 3,8% this week. With a quotation of €4.165 per tonne, it is less than €100 below the quotation of Gouda foil cheese, which remains virtually stable this week.

The cheddar market is under pressure. This is mainly due to much cheaper supply from Ireland and the United Kingdom. Cheddar curd is offered from €4.400 per tonne.
