Dry spring causes setback in milk production

June 12, 2025 - Wouter Baan - 1 reaction

Dutch milk supply showed a small decline last month compared to April. This shows a different pattern, because in other years supply often reached the seasonal peak in May.

The supply of milk last month amounted to 1.206.246 tonnes with an average fat percentage of 4,41%. In terms of volume, this is a decrease of 0,48% compared to the same month a year earlier. This means that the difference is increasing again – in a negative sense – because in April the supply was 0,1% below the 2024 level. Due to higher contents, the fat production even showed an increase then, but that was not the case again in May.

Daily production down
The limited decline is probably due to the dry spring, which meant that grass growth was far from optimal in many places. Bluetongue also plays a role. The decline is also visible in daily production. At 38.911 tonnes, it was lower in May than in April, when an average of 39.193 tonnes was delivered to the factories every day. Normally, daily production only drops again in June.
