The regular cow's milk price may be between €55 and €60 per kilo, the OrganicGoat Milk Cooperation (OGC) is working towards a milk price of €100 per 100 kilo. However, the development of returns in organic dairy goat farming also requires such a price, says secretary Johan de Vreese.
The industry has had some tough years and needs to recover, but that is now possible, he indicates. The demand for organic goat milk is picking up again and no milk has had to be devalued in the last year and a half.
That has been different. After the corona pandemic and since the start of the war in Ukraine with rising inflation, a difficult time followed for the more expensive food. The consumer had other priorities, often at the expense of the budget for food for home consumption.
The reduced demand for milk forced the cooperative to temporarily downgrade part of the milk to conventional. As a result, the cooperative experienced two difficult years, with a milk price that was too low for the goat farmers. This while the costs for the production of organic goat milk rose rapidly, due to, among other things, sharp price increases for organic feed, energy and personnel.
The difficult liquidity situation on the farms led to savings, including in the purchase of concentrates, often to the detriment of milk production. The poorer quality of the roughage in the spring of 2024 and the impact of bluetongue, exacerbated the decline in production. A few organic goat farmers also dropped out.
Nevertheless, the OGC managed to maintain the milk supply and, thanks to a new shortage on the market and increased demand, higher milk prices can once again be discussed.
Currently, the organic goat milk price is around €91,00 per 100 kilos, while this month it will go to €94,50. Including an expected additional payment of €2,50 per 100 kilos, the price is already moving considerably towards the desired target this year. What the OGC wants now is a number of new members, in order to maintain a strong position in the market for the club as a whole.
