Cono lowers for October, but slightly below average

Wednesday 10:15 AM - Klaas van der Horst

Cono Cheesemakers is lowering its milk price for October, in line with the rest of the Dutch dairy industry. However, the Beemster cheese producer is lowering its price by less than the average for the previous month. This is partly offset by Cono's lower price.

The cheesemaker has set the average paid milk price at €51,75 per 100 kilos of milk. This is €2,45 per 100 kilos less than the September price, as can also be calculated using the Boerenbusiness Dutch Milk price calculator.

The data also shows that the basic price at Cono is €47,49 per 100 kilos, while members can receive a maximum milk price of €53,49 per 100 kilos.

The average milk price drop in October, based on preliminary, incomplete data, was €2,87 per 100 kilos. The average basic price was €50,45, and the average of the maximum achievable prices was €56,31.

Branded cheeses
Cono is below that level, but its milk price will likely move closer to the average milk price paid in the coming months. This is because prices for branded cheeses, such as Beemster, and other premium cheeses, generally change less rapidly than prices for regular bulk cheeses.

Even though the market share of premium cheeses has been declining slightly in recent years, for Cono these types of cheeses, and their market share, are essential to being able to pay a better milk price.
