FrieslandCampina hopes for a quick restart of Borculo

Wednesday 17:00 AM - Klaas van der Horst

FrieslandCampina hopes to restart production at its ingredients factory in Borculo in November. An explosion occurred there on July 4th when two acids came together during the unloading of chemicals. Part of the village also experienced damage and disruption. After extensive investigation and repairs, a phased restart of the factory is now underway in consultation with the municipality, the company reports.

Besides local residents, FrieslandCampina itself also suffered significant disruption from the explosion. Milk flows had to be diverted, and problems arose in milk processing, among other things.

Not the entire Borculo site was shut down. Borculo is home to two dairy plants: the ingredients plant, which primarily processes whey from cheese factories elsewhere, and the infant nutrition plant. Milk is processed there into ingredients for the baby and infant nutrition sector. Concentrated milk and cream are also sent to other FrieslandCampina locations to make products such as butter and whipped cream. External customers are also served.

This is the first factory that has been idle for the fourth consecutive month and which the company is eager to get back up and running. The baby food factory has continued to operate and held an open house for local residents at the end of last month.

The municipality of Berkelland is also investigating the possibility of constructing an emergency access road for the nearby Hambroek district, so that in the event of an unexpected new disaster, there is still an escape route. The current two roads both lead close to the factory.
