FrieslandCampina plans to acquire Wisconsin Whey Protein, a US-based producer of high-quality whey protein isolates. The company will become part of FrieslandCampina Ingredients, which will significantly expand its global whey protein production capacity with the deal.
According to FrieslandCampina, Wisconsin Whey Protein has modern production facilities in a prominent dairy region of the US, where significant investments are currently being made to expand its capacity. Following the integration, FrieslandCampina Ingredients is expected to better serve customers with a broader and more scalable protein offering. There will also be a partnership with Stainless Technologies, Wisconsin Whey Protein's sister company that develops process technology.
With this acquisition, the dairy cooperative hopes to respond to the rapidly growing demand for high-quality proteins. The whey protein market is expected to grow by 6,6% annually through 2030, according to the cooperative.
FrieslandCampina Ingredients aims to grow into a global top three in sports and active nutrition. This is a new step, following previous investments in Dutch production capacity and new application centers in Asia, Europe, and soon North America. FrieslandCampina already has a production facility in the US, in Delhi, New York.
The transaction is subject to regulatory approval. Financial details were not disclosed. Wisconsin Whey Protein has annual revenues of $250 million.
