Milk supply higher again in January, but not a record

20 February 2026 - Klaas van der Horst

Dutch milk supply continued to rise in January, according to data from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). There was 6% more milk (and 4% more fat) added compared to the same period last year. This puts the supply well above the long-term average, but not at a record level. It is also unclear what role a potentially shifted production cycle plays in this.

Last year, it became clear that the bluetongue infection that swept through the European livestock population in 2024 led to a different calving and milk production pattern a year later. How this and the high milk prices in the second half of 2024 and the first nine months of 2025 interacted is not yet fully understood. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) is also silent on this, but these factors could play a role in the current high milk production.

The fact is that last January, approximately 70 million kilos more milk was delivered to Dutch factories than in January of the previous year. Production was at a relatively low level back then.

The high Dutch supply last month also fits into the pattern seen in neighboring countries.

Create a all time high However, the target for January has not been reached. For this, we must go back to January 2018. At that time, the monthly supply was 7 million kilos higher. More milk was also supplied in 2017.
Compared to December last year, more than 13 million kilos more were supplied.
