Inside: Manure Market

Bottom fertilizer prices seem to have been reached

20 April 2017

Thanks to the particularly good spring weather, the storage of the intermediaries is empty. The pressure on the fertilizer market is easing. However, the supply of manure remains as large as ever. Intermediaries do not expect the collection fees to fall any further. And so it seems that the bottom of the fertilizer prices for this spring has been reached.

Although plenty of manure is still being spread, it is clear that the tension surrounding the spreading of manure is decreasing. The weather is workable every day, which means that on balance a lot of manure has been spread.

Collection contributions tend to increase
For many intermediaries, the manure silos are empty, or will be empty soon. That situation does not happen every year. This means that there is plenty of room to temporarily store manure. The regions farthest from arable areas still have the most manure available.

The collection contributions
Even though the spreading season went smoothly and plenty of manure could be spread, the collection contributions for livestock farmers have not decreased. Collection contributions even tend to increase slightly this week.

Cattle prices in the Tilburg and Barneveld regions have increased by 1 euro and 0,50 cents per cubic meter respectively. The prices therefore amount to an average of 16,50 euros per cubic meter in the central region and 16,50 euros in the south region.

Pig manure prices also remain virtually the same as last week. In the central region, collection contributions increase to 23 euros per cubic meter. For the south region there is a minimal decrease of 13 cents compared to last week, to 23,17 euros per cubic meter.

Empty manure silos in the spring, a special phenomenon

First cut occurs early
This year it is special that the application of manure on arable land intersects with the first cut of grass. The first grass plots were harvested at the beginning of this week. That once again underlines how early that is. For contractors and intermediaries, this means that spreading manure is not yet finished.

The logistical hurdles of getting all the manure placed on time are the biggest annoyances for contractors and intermediaries. But, despite the limitations, people are generally content with the current state of affairs.
