Tone is set

Brussels positive about fertilizer substitute

30 May 2017 - Esther de Snoo - 1 reaction

The European Agriculture and Environment Commission gave a positive advice on Tuesday 30 May for the recognition of mineral concentrate as a fertilizer substitute. The European Parliament will vote in September.

The tone has been set for recognition of the mineral concentrate as a fertilizer substitute. The European Committee on Agriculture and the Environment has both given a positive opinion to the European Parliament (EP).

An initiative from the Netherlands

This is an amendment to the European Fertilizer Regulation. The amendment to the law is an initiative from the Netherlands and means that the mineral concentrate does not fall under the usage standards, but is added to it.

It mattered
There was no unanimous majority in the committee for the amendment. About two-thirds of the committee members voted in favour. Besides the Netherlands, Flanders, some German federal states, Ireland, Normandy and Italy also benefit from the recognition of the mineral concentrate.

European Parliament will vote in September
It is now up to the European Parliament, which will vote on the amendment in early September. If a majority agrees, recognition must still be negotiated individually with all member states. This is being led by Estonia. Malta is currently the president. At the earliest, the legislative amendment can be a fact in 2018.

Fantastic if it works, only the environmental benefit is already great, considerably less fertilizer will then have to be used, especially by the dairy farmer, and manure processing will become less expensive and our competitive position will improve.
