Inside: Manure Market

The dairy farmer has checked

17 August 2017

Despite the fact that the harvest of grain was delayed due to changeable weather, manure is now being applied in full. The conditions are good and the planning for the period up to September 1 is fairly full. Intermediaries do not experience much pressure, which is why the market is described as calm.

The most difficult type of manure is still cattle slurry. Dairy farmers who took action relatively recently are now having to suffer and are receiving little or no service. The sales of manure for the autumn were made in the previous months and changing the type of manure is no longer possible.

Financially it could be a difficult season

Rejection for cattle slurry
Where arable farmers still used cattle manure in the spring, people now seem to be so dismissive of it. It is now clear to many arable farmers that the 2017-2018 season could be quite a difficult season financially. As a result, the amounts to be paid carry more weight compared to the spring. An average of €10 is paid for fattening pig slurry and €3 for cattle slurry.

Dairy farmers are having a difficult time
It is a difficult story for dairy farmers to grasp. At least, that's how it appears. Since it has not even been 6 weeks since arable farmers had to scramble for cattle slurry. However, the dairy farmers were not at home. Now that the balance is being drawn up and it is desirable for them to go into the winter with emptier manure pits, the appeal is often rejected. As a result of the difficulty in placing cattle manure, the collection contributions for this type of manure are increasing.

VVOs do not run
The trade in VVOs is still not getting off the ground. This past season was financially expensive for livestock farmers who purchased VVOs early in the season (late spring, early summer). In order not to be confronted with this again this year, the option has apparently been chosen to only look at purchasing VVOs in the winter period. It is not yet possible to indicate immediately what financial consequences this will have.

Empty manure silos
In any case, many intermediaries will enter the winter with virtually empty manure silos, so that sales during the winter period will not immediately encounter logistical problems.
