The German state of Lower Saxony has again taken a Dutch manure transport off the road.
The government of Lower Saxony took a truck with hygienic animal manure off the road on Thursday 16 November. It concerns a load of 25 tons, coming from transporter Manure Processing Friesland. The truck was on its way to a digester in a more distant federal state in Germany.
Not for the first time
It is not the first time that a Dutch manure transport has been stopped by the authorities of Lower Saxony. According to Jan Scherf, owner of Manure Processing Friesland, it is the ninth time in the past 2 years. He went to a German judge. Scherf expects the decision of the court in Strasbourg in January.
No manure but waste
The German federal state does not regard animal manure as an animal by-product, but as waste. Different, stricter rules apply to waste transport. This attitude of Lower Saxony makes manure export more difficult. The Netherlands believes that hygienized animal manure is an animal by-product and not waste. The European Commission agrees with the explanation given by the Netherlands.
