Fertilizer producer OCI Nitrogen has advanced plans for the construction of the largest biodigester in the Netherlands. From 2020, the digester will have to process 700.000 tons of pig manure annually, thereby contributing to solving the manure surplus.
The biogas installation to be located on the Chemelot industrial estate (between Stein and Geleen) will produce more than 40 million cubic meters of biogas. This serves as a raw material for the production of melamine and fertilizer. Minerals, such as phosphate, remain as a residual product that can be reused as solid fertilizer.
License completed, waiting for subsidy
More precisely, this involves converting 4,5 million kilos of phosphate into dry fertilizer for export. Approximately 2 million kilos of nitrogen are captured and processed into concentrated liquid fertilizer.
The award of the SDE+ subsidy is crucial for the continuation of the project. The permit is already in place. Although the installation will only be operational in 3 years, the company is already getting questions from farmers when they can bring their manure.
