Province of North Brabant

Subsidy for measurement of innovative barn system

28 March 2018 - Kimberly Bakker

The province of Noord-Brabant makes subsidies available to measure how well innovative stable systems are used to combat the emission of odours, ammonia and particulate matter. €750.000 is available in the first opening.

The measurements determine the emission factor, which is necessary for a wide application of the system. With the first opening, approximately 12 barn systems can be measured. "The expectation is that the new systems will lead to less emissions of odour, ammonia, particulate matter and methane. The source approach also ensures fresher air in the stables. That is good for the farmer, his staff and the animals," says Anne-Marie Spierings, deputy for agricultural development of the province of North Brabant.

Expensive investment
More and more entrepreneurs in the province of Noord-Brabant are applying the methods (such as the source approach) in the new barn systems, but the measurements cost a lot of money and those investments cannot be recouped with open innovation. After the emission factor has been determined, every farmer can use the barn system without having to measure it again. Spierings: "With this subsidy, we remove a considerable barrier, in order to get stable systems officially allowed in the Netherlands."

Transition in livestock farming
The subsidy is part of the acceleration of the transition in livestock farming. The province wants livestock farming to become more sustainable more quickly and to emit fewer substances that are harmful to the environment and the living environment.

Requests for this subsidy can be submitted from April 3. Based on an evaluation, another funding round will probably follow later in the year.
