Chamber adopts motion above ground fertilization

June 26, 2018 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 3 comments

On Tuesday 26 June, the House of Representatives adopted the motion to extend the exemption for above-ground fertilization. Last week, the minister advised against the motion after Tjeerd de Groot (D66) and Frank Futselaar (SP) submitted it.

The Association for the Preservation of Farmers & the Environment (VBBM) and the Dutch Dairy Farmers' Union (NMV) are pleased with this development. Last week they offered the standing committee for Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality another manifest to maintain the exemption. "The adopted motion is a first step on a long road to a more source-oriented approach," said NMV chairman Harm Wiegersma.

Legal basis
By adopting the motion, VVBM and NMV are calling for a study into the effectiveness of source measures, in order to reduce ammonia emissions. Ultimately, however, a legal basis must be laid for this. "The time is right," the organizations said in a press release.

Erik Valk, chairman of the VBBM: "The current manure policy has seen better days. With our system you score well on all environmental and/or nature objectives that you want to achieve. In the coming 5 years we will fully focus on development and recognition of the NKS (Natural Cycle System) certificate developed by us. Now we still need government recognition, so that we can lay the required scientific basis together."

200 users
In July 2013, the motion to exempt from above-ground fertilization was passed by the entire House; this for a period of 5 years. About 200 land-based dairy farmers have since made use of this exemption. They believe that this is the natural way of fertilizing, with only positive effects on soil life and meadow birds.

Can these farmers simply apply manure with the deflector? Just like with dust control on dust sensitive soil?

If this is allowed, then the trailing foot is also allowed, I think. What is the problem? Just bullying peasant that's slowly becoming popular sport no.1

Ridiculous seems to go nowhere then all. But again with the deflector! The one immortalizes a capital in machines and the other is finished with a deflector for a few tens! Doesn't look like anything!!

Don't count yourself rich: There are strict conditions attached to qualify for this. These conditions may change slightly for the new scheme, we will discuss that: (Urea applies to both previous and current year)

- at least 85% of the agricultural area belonging to the company consists of grassland.
- the fertilizer application on your farm is less than 100 kg nitrogen per hectare of grassland.
- is the nitrogen surplus on your farm a maximum of 125 kg nitrogen per hectare, calculated according to the principle of a nitrogen balance at farm level.
-the cattle (with animal categories 100, 102 and 120) on your farm are grazed at least 1 hours a day for at least 30 days a year in the period from 150 April to 6 November.
-the cattle (with animal category 101) on your farm are grazed for at least 1 hours a day during the period from 30 April to 90 November inclusive.
- No animal manure other than cattle slurry or solid cattle manure may be supplied to the farm.

Do you also keep dairy and calf cows (animal category 100) on your farm? In that case, you must also meet the following conditions in the year preceding and in the year in which you make use of the exemption:

Are you unable to place the manure that you produce on your farm entirely on your own farm? Then the condition also applies that the milk production of your company may not exceed 14.000 kg per hectare.

From 1 January to 1 April and from 1 December to 1 January, the average weighted urea number of the milk produced on your farm was less than 21 milligrams per 100 grams of milk.
