Can wheat harvest lower sales price for manure?

12 July 2018 - Herma van den Pol

The fertilizer market is approaching an important point: the wheat harvest. This increases the tension, because will it cooperate again? And do arable farmers also have sufficient space to supply slurry? However, the main question is whether these developments can lead to a lower selling price.

There was also no room for lower sales prices for manure in June. Only the price for cattle slurry in the center of the country recorded a decrease of almost 1%. This is also the cheapest fertilizer, with a price of €16,67 per tonne.

Smallest increase, but most expensive fertilizer
Pig manure in the south of the country recorded the smallest increase (+1,3%) and amounts to €26,33 per tonne, which immediately makes it the most expensive manure. In the center of the country the price is pig manure (after an increase of 2,1%) to €24,67 per tonne. The price of cattle slurry in the south of the country increased to €19,50 per tonne.

All types of fertilizer are recording higher prices this week, compared to 1 year ago in the same period. The types of manure in the south of the country in particular are considerably more expensive to sell. The price for pig manure is 13,64% higher, while cattle manure is even 21,88% more expensive.

How much installation space is there?
Now that the wheat harvest is starting to come into view, the fertilizer market is once again approaching an important point. It must become clear whether the weather will allow the use of liquid manure and how much space will be available arable sector still has to place manure. The players are particularly concerned about the nitrogen space.

If all goes well, the pressure on fertilizer prices may decrease. However, rain (or other negative things) throws spanner in the works, then the problems that arose in the spring will become even greater. This means that fertilizer prices could reach a new high.

Manure processing
However, the rising prices in the meantime ignore the Replacement Processing Agreements (VVOs). These remain at around €1,70 per kilo of phosphate in June, which means that the price is almost 38% higher than 1 year ago. It indicates that the processing problems have not increased, but also indicates that everything is much tighter than 1 year ago.

For dairy farmers, the increasing manure prices are often manageable; partly due to rising milk prices and the limited pressure to dispose of manure. This is different for fattening pig farmers. Manure sales were already a problem there (due to a lack of demand), but now the difficult meat market makes matters even more problematic. This sets the manure market on course for an exciting finale in the spreading season. The collection contributions for cattle manure in the various regions.
