Muddle around spreading manure on maize

13 September 2018 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The spreading of manure is limited in mid-September on grassland and clay soil. The DCA collection contributions outline the effect this has on the disposal costs for manure. It also appears to be a mess around the spreading of manure on maize land.

The sounds from the field indicate that very little manure was spread (comparatively) in September. A lot of manure had already been placed before September 1, especially on arable land. Intermediaries indicate that they are as good as ready for this season. What remains after mid-September? This involves spreading manure on grassland and clay soil. Not much is expected from this either, except some contract work to spread the manure that is already present on the livestock farms.

When to drive out onto corn fields?
It is striking that there is a difference in the interpretation of the permission to spread manure on corn land. According to the letter of the regulation, this is not permitted, but here and there there are people who give a different explanation. As a result, manure is still spread on corn land, taking into account the sowing of a catch crop.

Now that the finishing season is almost at the finish line, plans have to be made for the new season. On average, arable farmers have not yet focused on the preparations for the 2019 season, which means that the coming weeks will be quiet.

Extension does not depress price
The collection contributions remain stable. The extension of the spreading season has not been able to prevent the sales costs for manure from increasing and reaching a relatively high level. For example, pig slurry has an underprice of €23,50 per tonne (Markelo) and the top price is set at €28 per tonne (Deurne). Prices are remarkably high, especially in the south of the country.

The picture is no different for the collection contributions for cattle slurry. Here too, the highest prices are paid in the south of the country. Once again, sales are cheapest in Markelo (€16,50 per tonne). The most expensive manure is found in Tilburg (€21,50 per tonne). This is despite the fact that the center of the country is above the 2017 level.

Chicken manure continues to show large differences in prices. For example, the lower end is €16,50 per tonne (Deurne and Uden), but sales in Leeuwarden and Markelo cost around €28 per tonne. It is the largest price difference ever, which has lasted for 10 weeks. The collection contributions for pig manure have shown a small increase.
