Periphery is making a case for fertilizer valorisation

30 November 2018 - Tim Roetman - 5 comments

There are 6 established parties in the periphery that want to boost the value of manure. Under the title 'Next level valorising manure', Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is entering into a partnership with Agrifirm, Darling Ingredients International, De Heus, VanDrie Group, FrieslandCampina and ForFarmers.

The collaboration will start in 2019 and the aim is to gain an idea of the potential of the manure valorisation. The research focuses, among other things, on the development of new products and technology. Regulations and financing will also be mapped out.

Recycle vision
Co-initiator Martin Scholten, General Director of the Animal Sciences Group at WUR, explains: "Current manure processing is mainly aimed at getting rid of the manure surplus. However, slurry, digestate from manure fermentation and the fertilizer pellets made from this limited value for the grass and crop. These have to be supplemented with fertilizers and that causes the current environmental problems with regard to fertilization, while animal manure is basically a very good raw material for soil fertilization."

Scholten continues: "Our program focuses mainly on the quality of the product that you make from the manure: low-emission fertilization that is good for the soil, soil life and soil fertility. Reusing high-quality nutrients in manure is also fully in line with the circular vision of the Ministry of Agriculture."

Parting
There are already various techniques for upgrading manure. The collective wants to optimize, scale up and professionalize the technologies for upgrading the thick and thin fraction. The companies also want to reduce the costs of topping up. Together with the Netherlands Center for Manure Valuation, we are looking at which technologies best match these objectives.

I am missing one in the list of initiators, and that is the supreme guardian of the sector, Rabobank. So aware of his duty of care...Forgot to ask? or just didn't give them at home...
