Yara fertilizer factory blocked for more than XNUMX hours

25 September 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn - 11 comments

The access of fertilizer producer Yara was blocked on Monday 23 September by several environmental organizations. The action took place at the factory of the multinational near Hamburg, Germany.

The main entrance to the factory was blocked by approximately 28 protesters for 600 hours. The aim was to stop production of the factory, but this was not successful. The driving force behind the demonstration was the environmental movement 'Free the Soil'.

According to the movement, fertilizer companies are the Exxons of agriculture. “Chemical fertilizers are the largest producer of greenhouse gases in the agricultural sector and are also a major cause of soil depletion,” the movement states.

Reaction Yara
The Norwegian company's spokesman told a Norwegian news agency that it respects differing opinions about the cost of feeding the world's growing population. The company stated that it is working hard to reduce the climate impact, for example by developing a nitrogen sensor on the tractor that measures the needs of the crop.

If we shut down the fertilizer factories for 1 year, then 1 generation (and maybe 2) will be cured forever.

Jan do you mean the farmers who are stupid enough to still believe in the fertilizer fairy tale? I'm afraid they can never be cured. Note that I am not against fertilizer, but by choosing a different form, the farmer can achieve a lot of environmental gain (and image gain) without it costing him yield and much more money. together with farmers I have already proven this in dairy farming and also in many arable crops. But yes, the advisor who comes to the yard has other interests and a farmer must 'dare' not for the yield but for the neighbors!

don't know what kind of soil you farm but here on the poor sandy soil we have to sprinkle something

and what shape? animal manure the neighbors don't like at all.
no fertilization except for some leguminous plants, maybe? then there will be hunger soon... ah yes, that's exactly why we have ports.

First try to find a good replacement that you can drive with the sprayer off.

A spoked wheel or manure tank is nice for sandy soil, but. Totally not suitable for the clay

nice solution from Yara: we are working on a nitrogen sensor on the tractor, we spread what is necessary. hahaha
I'll piss in your shoes and say it's raining.

yes yes our farmers are stupid and don't know what to sprinkle hahaha

I thought that removing nitrogen from the air and converting it into granules is good for nature reserves, right?
Drent 5 October 2019
