Inside Manure

Usage standards play a role in the remaining manure supply

14 May 2020 - Chanti Oussoren

It will remain relatively quiet on the manure market for the time being. There is still some supply of both fattening pig slurry and cattle slurry, which may have to do with the new manure standards. Some prices fluctuate slightly, but in general prices are stabilizing.

The remaining manure supply can largely be attributed to the adjustment of the rules for the use of manure in 2020. For example, the phosphate use standards for land with a high phosphate status have been reduced to 75 kilos (grassland) and 40 kilos (arable land). The standards for the neutral and low classes have been raised. A new class (spacious) has also been added.

By this new layout of the phosphate classes at RVO, companies may have ended up in a different class and therefore have to adjust other phosphate use standards. All in all, this meant that less manure could be spread this spring than in previous years.

Waiting for vacant arable land
To further reduce the manure supply, manure can still be spread on the mowed lawns, but this will only have a minimal effect. In addition, there is the uncertainty regarding derogation, which is still not clear. Traders indicate that we are therefore waiting for the moment when manure can be spread on arable land again. However, this will still take several months.

The DCA quotes generally show stabilizing prices. The average collection amount of fattening pig slurry is stable in the central region but drops slightly in the south region. This is exactly the other way around for the collection amounts for cattle slurry. In the southern region the prices remain unchanged, but in the central region the prices are still increasing slightly.

Fattening pig slurry
The average price of fattening pig slurry in the south region will drop to €22,83 this week. This decrease is due to a price drop of 50 cents in Deurne. The price in Deurne is therefore this week at €23,50, still the highest price in the region. Furthermore, the prices remain unchanged and Tilburg continues to have the lowest price in the region at €22

In the central region, all prices remained unchanged this week. This means that the average price remains at €20. The leader in the region remains Lichtenvoorde (€21) and the lowest price remains in Markelo (€19).

Cattle Slurry
The average prices of cattle slurry remain unchanged in the southern region. The average price there remains €15,17. The highest price remains at €15,50 in Tilburg, in Deurne and Uden the price remains unchanged at €15.

There have been some slight price increases in the central region. The average price there increases to €13,50. The collection amounts in Lichtenvoorde and Markelo will increase by 50 cents. Lichtenvoorde is quoted at €14,50 and remains the leader in the region. The price in Markelo is listed at €13,50 and the price in Barneveld remains unchanged and is listed at the bottom at €12,50.
