Petition for own feeding plan, national day of action on the way

15 July 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

LTO Nederland has started a petition to urge agriculture minister Carola Schouten to hasten to carry out the research of the dairy sector's own sector plan. Farmers Defense Force (FDF) has meanwhile announced a national day of action: on Wednesday 22 July.

The organization made this announcement on social media and the app groups of its followers on Tuesday evening. No further explanation is given, so further details are not yet available. The fact that farmers who want to participate in this are being asked to refuel the tractors seems obvious in view of the previous demonstrations by FDF and the lifting of tractor bans.

FDF driver Sieta van Keimpema late Omroep Brabant know that the idea is to call on everyone to stay at home as much as possible on July 22 in order to reduce nitrogen emissions. "Working from home for a day, that is the first call. And we are going to reinforce that." Van Keimpema does not yet reveal what that boosting consists of.

Put pressure on minister
LTO Netherlands states in a statement with the petition wanting to put pressure on Schouten, so that the minister accelerates the calculation of the alternative feeding plan for dairy farming. The Minister has promised this study by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) in response to the motion passed by members of the House of Representatives Jaco Geurts (CDA) and Mark Harbers (VVD).

If this calculation shows that the sector's alternative yields more nitrogen reduction than the minister's measure, then according to LTO, dairy farmers should be able to choose between the 2 measures. According to LTO, dairy farmers are concerned whether the minister is actually going to work energetically with the implementation of the motion. That is why the organization has started a petition.
