The market for solid fertilizers suffered considerably from the 'first wave of corona' in mid-August. As a result, demand far outstripped supply. The market is now somewhat in balance again. Has this had any effect on prices, and what are the expectations for the coming period?
In mid-August, companies were certainly: 'Anyone who has ordered on time will receive delivery on time.' The demand from many arable farmers for solid fertilizers was so great that delivery times increased to several weeks. This kite is no longer flying. The market has returned to some extent, according to various companies. The reason? It's wet on land. A lot has also been produced in recent months. Since we have all been working from home en masse, there was more green waste. In short: more compost.
No more shortages
A few months ago there was also a shortage of mushroom post. Mushroom farms suffered greatly from the first corona wave. The second wave, which we are dealing with today, seems to have a smaller impact. There is therefore no longer a shortage. It remains to be seen how the winter period develops. A severe winter can still cause shortages, it is said. Incidentally, the companies do report that the demand from agriculture is still only sparse. Most solid fertilizers are sold at garden centers.
The latter is also the reason that the prices are still at the same level. Champost still pays €1,00 to €3,00 (delivery to the country), depending on the region and transport distance. For straw manure, goat manure and solid cattle manure, the price remains between €2,00 and €3,00 per tonne (loosely on the land). The average price for organic waste compost (class H) is between €4,00 and €6,00 (depending on the area). With green compost, the price is usually €2,50 to €3,00 higher.
Stability expected
Little change is expected in the market in the coming period. Many agricultural companies are currently filling up their space and filling in the last tons. This works well with compost and mushroom compost. The demand for these products is therefore expected to remain constant. The winter will determine how the market will develop in the coming months.
