Former arable foreman is fed up

What are farmers not to blame for?

15 May 2018 - Boerenbusiness - 56 comments

Former chairman of LTO Akkerbouw, Jaap Haanstra, is fed up. “Farmers are blamed for everything,” he notes. This while they produce cleaner and safer than ever. An example is when it became known that the insect population is also declining sharply in the Netherlands. That is why he sends a letter to Boerenbusiness.

I am done. We are getting one reproach after another right now. And by that I mean all sectors. However, because I am an arable farmer, this affects me most directly. Apparently we are now killing all insects again, another time it will be meadow birds or we will use cancer-causing glyphosate. Whatever happens the agricultural sector will have it on its plate. Incidentally, these are usually very vague or indirect, sometimes even wrongly sought, conclusions.

Swallows full of poison
For example, it was recently announced that the swallows would now be full of poison. One should first look at which substances they are, and only then look at the areas where they hibernate. The substances found in the birds have not been used in Europe for decades.

We only ask for appreciation for what we do

Recently I was at the vet with my dog. There was a leaf there, I think it was called 'The Animals'. It contained an article with the headline 'Place of crime: the field'. The headline alone says it all. As farmers, we don't need any respect or petting ourselves, but I do ask for appreciation for what we do. Just like everyone else in this country. But I'm more than tired of the way we're being put down now.

Small group
There is a small group in society that tries to blacken us. That has to stop, otherwise I don't know where to go with my anger. We produce cleaner and safer than ever. Society gets food at a price that is so low that there is a lot of money left over to do nice things.

We are all trying to become even cleaner and more refined and are making every effort to have no residue on our products by 2030. There is an eye for what nature gives us and what we would like to preserve. We honor life.

undeserved
We don't deserve what is happening now and being blamed on us. I'm writing this now and I may regret it later. But what is happening now excites every fiber in my body and I cannot let it pass. I therefore call on everyone to take action. Each in his own way. Organizations, cooperatives, political parties and customers. In short: the entire agricultural sector.

Trots
We produce food. We do this safely, aware of the social discussions and the demands of consumers and citizens. We'll do that today, we'll do that tomorrow and we'll still be doing it 10 years from now. We bring our products to every family's table at least 6 times a day. I'm proud of that.

I am convinced that citizens and consumers appreciate us, but must stop the smear campaign by a certain group in society. We must and may be proud of what we do and that also applies to future generations. And let it be the case that they also want to choose the farming profession.

Nice piece, written by a former arable foreman.
I think this expresses what many fellow growers feel/experience.
great that Boerenbusiness this further illustrates.
The men of BoerBewust have been trying to refute the great inequality as it is spread across our sector via social media and to highlight the positive sides!!
Give this platform space, and citizens will embrace our sector more!

Otherwise, the organic farmers among us will be declared a saint, Jaap. However, there is no journalist who considers that the insects and birds have declined in recent years from the weed burning and copper spraying.

You can also share the article yourself via social media. If everyone does that, you also have a large reach. The national newspapers only publish if it suits them or if they receive money!

Taken from the heart! worked in the chemical industry for several years. The demands on plant protection products are unbelievable! I once heard an insider say that the chemical industry is capable of imitating a raspberry. However, this would never be allowed because it would contain too many toxic substances. All interest groups that now exist (Boerkalender, TeamAgro NL, Boeren van Nederland, etc.) should join forces and make one fist against all attacks by the NGOs and other organizations that like to spread their "truth" in all media.

Our colleagues with livestock: cows, pigs and poultry, among others, have been dealing with total misunderstanding and false allegations from the sector for much longer. You could wait for arable farming to get a kick out of it in the media.

As frustrating as it may be, take a look in the mirror first. A pre-harvest spray so that wheat threshing can start a day earlier is madness. Yet we have become accustomed to such antics. Continuing the old way is also not an option.

Because it's hype. As long as the masses need scapegoats and don't unlearn conformism, nothing will change. Influential people such as Roos Vonk, professor of Social Psychology, columnist, trainer/Coach and former chairman of Wakker Dier make grateful use of this.

@Monique; Don't forget the power of the postcode lottery money in media land and with the action companies (the so-called 'charities')! They buy the media attention with the money they swim in thanks to the money-addicted postcode lottery participants.
According to the 16 May 2018
Nowadays food is almost becoming a kind of religion and in a religion it seems that it is no longer about the facts, but about the opinion of the biggest shouting horn. At many appearances in the media we often go on the defensive with facts, among other things. Our opponents (media, environmental groups, etc) are not impressed by this. It's time for the attack. We don't always have to be friendly to the media. Confront them with a sharp rebuttal that shatters their delusions.

Action, during the cucumber season, block access to the offices of Trowu, Greenpeace, the green Amsterdam, and natural monuments with large packs of straw. Loads full. That gives publicity, a spurt in the aversion of these parties that makes them lie even more and lose their credibility completely.

Must be done with all this nonsense

Nice article Jaap
That is not so surprising, most swallows stay in Africa from September to mid-April, where DDT is still widely used to combat the Malaria mosquito. Such a study says nothing about Dutch agriculture. World Health Organization, Professor Maureen Coetzee : In 1999 South Africa had a huge malaria epidemic. Thanks to the research we were doing, we realized that Anopheles funestus mosquitoes had developed resistance to the pyrethroids we sprayed indoors, causing a massive increase in malaria cases. We were able to recommend switching back to using dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), and the South African malaria control program put in place a mosaic scheme to manage resistance - meaning some homes were sprayed with DDT, while others were sprayed with pyrethroids . This approach helped end the outbreak and South Africa has not experienced a major epidemic since. source: http://www.who.int/mal.../mpac/interview-maureen-coetzee/en/

It's unbelievable how the sector has been cornered. And where is LTO.......... They just make it happen.

If there is fraud they are right on a television program to say that farmers are criminals and that they expel them. While you don't hear them when the farmer is put in the corner with untruths.

Then an old foreman has to stand up to stop this. Sad deeply sad.

For whom is the lto actually an advocate

Dear people, you are all right, but the citizen is not interested at all. You should certainly not expect anything from politics, there is a double agenda.
Timmy 19 May 2018
Jaap, you put it beautifully.
I think we should put 'Wageningen' to work. In their innocence they have pushed agriculture in a direction, which in retrospect is not quite right. They/we know so much more than twenty or more years ago today. As farmers, we need to force them to look at all the consequences of experiments they do, not the small negative outcomes at the bottom of the drawer. We then know that the small results expressed in ppm can still have a negative impact in nature. And they should not say: look, people are still getting older, because those people are not the only inhabitants of this planet.
Polymono 21 May 2018
Quite right Jaap, but what good are candles and glasses if the owl doesn't....will. Unfortunately, the citizen is not awake... 4 things are very important for 95% of the population: football, lotto, sex and above all earn a lot without working much. "Farmer dies, green reigns", was 3 years ago and slogan of mine at a Flemish farmers demonstration against the red and orange areas where practically NOTHING was possible due to the communist hassle of the greens. if this continues, they will soon deliver the Pope, they are so holy... whoever is green must still mature and that means socialist right down to the coffin. here we have a plane flying overhead every 2 minutes.
what flows out there is purely carcinogenic, without further ado and no tax is paid on it. Do not long for it, in our western world we urgently need a shutdown in all areas.

Nice story, very good. We should hear these kinds of voices more often, indeed, preferably in front of the national newspapers. All the points above are completely correct and correct. Only problem we have is that we don't have time to lobby or organize. We perish in work, earn nothing, but carry on out of a sense of duty, passion and conviction. That is hard to find for many people these days. That is precisely why we have little time to meet, sit together or form a fist. This applies to advocacy and also to marketing. And that's being used against us. Indeed, industries, politics and public interest are vast majorities, which no one can resist. Farming does not. The only way to make a fist would be to REALLY jointly allow food production to stagnate. Stop taking for granted that a "fresh" truck comes to be supplied at retail three times a day. Just leave the shelves empty for three days. Food is still a basic need. That thought is completely gone. Food is seen as a low-budget necessity, which is available anytime, anywhere and on which you spend little. But entertainment, leisure, entertainment and enjoyment, are spent on that. Indeed, the post-war generation has pushed the basic needs into the background, because we no longer have scarcity. The only way to get through to the people is to create that scarcity. Just let them bite the bullet. If there is little choice or even little to eat, let's see if we can make a living from nature reserves, recreation and greening. That's going to be a nice meal. In the Netherlands we have become a bunch of lazy managers and civil servants who earn money from behind a desk. This is possible because our prosperity and luxury have made basic facilities a matter of course. So we need to make that a little less obvious. But that is not easy, because globalization and international trade will mean that you will have to pull one front across the sector. To start with, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France. You can't rely on agreements from Eastern European countries, moreover, they run entirely on subsidies from Brussels. It is therefore more effective to stop these subsidies than to ask for their cooperation. If we can then combine the agricultural sector in Western Europe, you will be very strong within 2 weeks. But then no one is allowed to screw up. Because if 8 out of 10 decide not to supply agricultural products below a certain price, but the 9th and 10th see their chance to supply something BELOW that price, then it will not work. So you will have to organize that well and block or punish the under-crowders. That's not easy. Go for it. That takes guts, time and perseverance. Someone has to step forward and take this on. And not make the market work AGAINST us by creeping up the consumer's ass at any price, but let the market work FOR us by creating scarcity. Since our society is governed by money, the chances of success are high.
Leo 22 May 2018
As farmers, we are just as spoiled as the rest of the population.
If we had to choose, we would of course rather sell our product to a fat European with money than a poor starving African.

And all those fat people with their anorexic partners can make all kinds of demands on their food and don't have to feel guilty about eating the food that someone else can't afford.

The strength of the message must therefore come from the fact that high consumer demands lead to higher prices at the checkout and that cheap labor from home and abroad is misused for this and that pushes large groups of consumers out of the market.

No farmer is to blame...
B. van het Landt 22 May 2018
Do not agree that we as farmers are as spoiled as the rest of the population. On average, we have to work much harder and longer, run much more risk, have to invest enormous capital, receive little appreciation. You can blame us that it is our own choice, and that we shouldn't complain because we can choose differently. We can also hang out on the couch as Jan Modaal and pick up a TV from the municipality if we get on welfare. But still, do we want that? Wouldn't we rather work daytime and thought to build something after all? In other words, indeed, our own destiny is indirectly our own choice, but at the same time it is also our life's work. You don't just give up on that. That is also the reason why farmers go on for so long when they actually earn nothing. Disastrous for the price, but it's in the soul. That's how we are, at heart. Keep going until you can't anymore, fuck to give up. So no, we as farmers are definitely not as spoiled as the rest of the population. And I can add that this applies to many independent entrepreneurs. They all step up when necessary, but most employees do not. As far as I'm concerned, all collective labor agreements, trade unions and employment can be lifted tomorrow, then let everyone become self-employed or entrepreneur and hold up their own pants. Let's see what they're going to work on. Then look at how our economy is reviving, that will be Chinese situations! Done with the pampering, the enjoyment and the terraces. First work for a living, provide bread on the table, and only then have fun. Enjoyment should be a side issue, but for most of us work is a side issue. "Let the boss pay, or the government." That must end!

Why get annoyed at someone else when you're happy?
B. van het Landt 23 May 2018
Why not get annoyed if you're not happy?
The story of Jaap Haanstra makes it very clear that we are NOT satisfied? We are tired of being blamed for everything. That seems like a very legitimate reason to be annoyed! Rightly so. Jack is absolutely right.
We can all preach roses and shine and pretend to be content, but you can also choose not to let this happen to you. And then I think you get to a point where you say "I can't take this anymore".
And let's turn this around. Why are citizens annoyed by farmers if they are satisfied? Wanting to eat for a penny and then still annoyed by the stench or mud on the road. The benefits, not the burdens. So I am immensely annoyed - along with Jaap and many others. Rightly so. Dissatisfaction is the result of that, not the cause!
B. van het Landt 23 May 2018
This also immediately shows why we will never be able to make a fist. Many resign themselves to their impotence, others only see the problems when it is too late and some just accept that idiots without knowledge think something of us and base policy on that. The resistance of most is limited to some grumbling at LTO, and due to a lack of time we often do not get around to going any further. And yet, if you read Jaap's story, and see the harrowing cases of family suffering, I would still hope that the resistance becomes a bit more fervent and we can unite together, even if we do not agree on all points. If we don't do that, I predict that most farmers and family businesses will be finished within 10 to 20 years. Then there are only huge companies left, which have to produce at cost price, and the rest relocate elsewhere. As with most policies, it is only in retrospect, when it is too late, that how counterproductive they have been. Just wait and see.

My hunch is that with your speech and with these sentences you are not telling the many relatives of the at least 75 people who died from the Q fever outbreak and the 1000-1300 people who have become chronically ill and still experience the consequences of their illness on a daily basis. will convince.
Certainly not, where the goat industry still avoids any liability and the government has looked away for years and neglected the health of the citizens. While the many victims of the largest humanitarian disaster in the Netherlands since the turn of the century are still waiting for some compensation, the direct causes, the goat farmers, already arranged this compensation eight years ago. Understandable for himself.

@STOFFEL; Think about solving the cause instead of treating the symptoms. Be nice and tidy with your land instead of burping it. Maybe just stop plowing and give soil life a real chance?! And don't say it's a boon, because there are colleagues who show the opposite.
This does mean that the percentage of harvested fruit in your cropping plan may not exceed 50%. The latter in particular is a pain point in the much too intensive arable areas when you see what kind of crop rotations are practiced. However, if one starts to calculate broadly for a construction plan and also honestly includes the lower yields and extra costs due to this too intensive construction plan, you come to the conclusion that it is almost the same!!! I have not yet included the price effects in the sales market that will probably result from fewer potatoes, onions and carrots!

@Commuter; those ditches are not there for a small shower, but for the downpours in a short time. Whether or not you plow, no 1 plot can compete. And on many grounds, plowing remains a good tillage.
commuter June 10, 2018
@Piet I don't want to be pedantic or pretend that I know everything better.
But Piet take a look at companies that have been working on it 100% for some time and also use a suitable construction plan with a lot of soil nutrition, then your eyes will really open. And don't be distracted by the stories of eco-teams because it can't be missed. That seems to be the case with those companies that have far too intensive construction plans and do not sufficiently respect their soil and do not think sufficiently how to respond to this problem and therefore return to the old mistake! Here in SE Netherlands, where we almost completely drowned in 2016, you could easily remove the plots of the non-ploughers in that year. And in a very positive sense because of the worm ducts that provide very good biological drainage. Apart from the further positive effects on soil life and soil structure.

Now from the sidelines he suddenly knows better and "we" have to go against it...
Chemical farming, and the stands organizations, are both obsolete.
No 'farmer consciously' (only focuses on chemical agriculture) can compete with that, even if you go on the film with Donald Trump!
