Keep courage farmers, in 30 years the appreciation will come

11 September 2019 - Boerenbusiness - 26 comments

I was surprised to read D66's solution to the nitrogen problem. Eliminate half of the Dutch poultry and pig stock and the nitrogen problem is solved. How simple, says Mr Tjeerd de Groot of D66. It only costs 1% of the economy.

I find it very sad that politicians in The Hague have so little knowledge. That there is someone who makes these kinds of statements. After all, agriculture accounts for more than 20% of Dutch exports. If you cut this drastically, the damage in the entire agricultural chain is much greater than the 1% of the economy that De Groot has created.

By the way, what is his story that 70% of emissions from the agricultural sector are based on? Nitrogen consists for 66% of NOx (industry and traffic) and for 33% of NH3 (humans and animals, consisting of cows, chickens, pigs, pets, animals in the wild and the fertilizer industry). A very different number than 70%. It is nice to know that nitrogen emissions from Dutch agriculture have fallen by 1990% from 65 to the present.

Buying all nitrogen
If politicians deal with the nitrogen rules in this way, the aircraft industry, housing, traffic and industry will buy up all nitrogen from the farmers in no time. Resulting in the end of Dutch agriculture. This results in greater environmental damage than the grass that will soon no longer have a destination in the Netherlands. Now the grass growth results in a large uptake of CO2, because grass is always harvested by the farmer and therefore provides a lot of oxygen. Politicians do not take these numbers into account. incomprehensible.

An enormous mountain of waste is also created, because the Dutch livestock eat our waste (for example soy meal, beet pulp and palm oil kernels). The Dutch agricultural sector must be nurtured if we want to feed the strong population increase on the globe in the future. No other country in the world is as suitable for food production as the Netherlands. We are the second largest food exporter in the world after America. We should be proud of this.

Food production compensation
D66's plan, in addition to the unemployment it will result in, could lead to a global famine. If the Netherlands falls back in food production, which country can compensate? No other country. One thing is certain: D1 does not understand what agriculture is and thinks - I believe - that food falls from the sky.

De Groot of D66 says something that is not based on anything. Politicians say again and again: only promote vegetable production of food. So you see that politicians know nothing about farming. Only small parts of the globe are suitable for vegetable production. Most areas are too dry, contain too many rocks, are barren, too steep, too wet or have too little bearing capacity.

Cattle can still graze in all these areas: from 1 cow or reindeer per 15 hectares to up to 4 animals per hectare. The latter is possible in the Netherlands, given the growth potential of the grass. Only from an environmental point of view this is not allowed by the government. Humans are omnivorous and naturally eat meat and plants. So animal husbandry, in addition to crop production, is necessary to feed humans. It is time for politicians to think ahead longer than their noses are long.

Food will become increasingly scarce in the future. No other country grows food with such a low environmental impact as the Dutch farmer. Now think about politics. Make sure that we citizens have our recycling pointer closed. Only allow products that are 100% biodegradable. Load everything the same way. Air traffic and shipping are virtually unburdened, while they are the major polluters.

Farmer increasingly threatened
The farmer in our society is increasingly threatened by politics (out of ignorance, lack of knowledge and influence by scientists and nature organizations). The louder they say that things are going badly with the environment and plant diversity, the more subsidy and land they receive from the government (their revenue model). The same goes for science: the worse it is with the environment, the more money it receives for research (including their revenue model).

The farmer is a willing victim and yet says nothing in return. Because the media only bring the negative news, they influence society. This is so bad that environmental activists are emerging who threaten the farming families. Education, too, is already beginning to influence children with not eating meat.

The Chinese and some wealthy Arabs do have a vision for the future. They are already buying up large farms all over the world. They understand that in the future there will be no oil crises, but water and food crises. So farmers: keep your spirits up. In 30 years you will be appreciated again, because then we too will have a famine. It does not surprise me if we then reclaim the nature reserves in our country for agricultural purposes. Hunger breaks laws.

This is in response to it Boerenbusiness article:

and to think that mister de Groot has been director of the nzo for 7 years. The sector has paid him a generous salary for seven years. Blaming the agricultural sector now is nothing short of scandalous.

What a great piece, Jack.
Only I'm afraid I won't be there in 30 years, and the appreciation
so miss out.

Good story Jaap MAJOOR, but we already knew this as farmers. you have to tell this story in The Hague because they also have to believe this and I am afraid that will not happen. And in thirty years there will be a few farmers, the rest are in the old people's home to tell you that you maybe he was right, but that is of no use to them in the old people's home.

As I've said before, the real problem is overpopulation. Borders are radically closed and a fuck off premium for anyone who wants to get out of here. (There is still plenty of money in The Hague.) Housing shortage solved, traffic jams solved and the air quality in the Randstad is back to normal. Easy.

Beautiful piece. I think rather.
Received a compliment about the product delivered yesterday. Gives me hope again ;)

Jaap, they also said this 30 years ago ...... Every 5 years ...... whoever makes it now, has made it ........ conclusion is, every 10 years half of the farmers gone. Only the livestock remained about the same. But that will change, the livestock is now going down with the number of farmers. The conclusion is that the Rabo plan will fail.

Allee, who do you think is in charge in this little country: Rutte, or the Rabo. Doesn't seem that difficult to me. Rabo in Utrecht determines everything in this society, their tentacles are very deep everywhere.
Rutte is nothing, just shakes hands and smiles all day long.

The Salafists are already teaching the Muslim children to kill in their eyes infidels, gays and other Western thinkers!
And these people are financially supported by the Dutch government and received all kinds of private fees to come to the Netherlands. They were sometimes even brought back from Syria as terrorists. How crazy is it to train children to hate and KILL other thinking fellow humans????? and what do they do with the farmers who love their animals every day, 7 days a week?

How ROT it still has to become drug criminals are brought back by minister Grapenhaus .. children are trained to kill people and this is the result of (antichrist, party of the animals, awake animal, vegan and vegetarian) thinking!

As long as Chinese and Arabs do not buy agricultural land in the most productive location in the world (NL), then you know that there are more who see no future for Dutch agriculture.

if in 30 years' time young livestock farmers still want to farm in the Netherlands.

SALIC, the largest agricultural investor worldwide and co-owner of G3, shows where the future Dutch farmer can go full throttle again.

You are doomsayers. There is nothing wrong with eating less meat, but for a better price. The grassland should contain a little more nitrogen-fixing red clover, it lowers costs. Here and there it is okay to have a tree in the meadow and arable land. Looks much better and you meet much more sympathy. I want to be a farmer, where I feel good, earn well and be appreciated. Otherwise you have to change something, but don't keep nagging.
peta 12 September 2019
Well, Gijsje, I can imagine your wish, but it will remain a wish. As long as we keep open borders, the discipline of the market will reign and the food will come from the cheapest producers. And you won't be one of them. Perhaps you want and can do it differently, but then it is unsocially hard to get a very meager sandwich.
Keith Hanse 12 September 2019
In 30 years is really too late. First look in 3 years !! It is going hard with the farmers who stop. No successors, financing that is no longer sufficient. Etc etc. The big ones get bigger and become industries and the family business disappears. And that is hard.
Skirt 12 September 2019
The great ones don't get any bigger, except for a few who think they have to take on even more guilt. The low interest rates certainly encourage that, if inflation continues and the Euros become helicopter money, then land is a safe asset as long as you can do something with it. However, this has little to do with agricultural business management as such, but everyone is gradually becoming aware of this. You currently make money mainly through the idiotic ECB policy of printing money until it collapses.

As long as animal welfare and environmental requirements are laid down in law, consumers will no longer have to pay for their piece of meat.
Steven Huysmans 12 September 2019
"Education is also already starting to influence children with not eating meat."

Freedom of education, freedom of vision developing within a school where meat is critically examined for its side effects on water use and emissions. I am grateful that science continues to investigate and share its findings.

For farmers against unknowingly dealing with nature.
Frans de Koopman 12 September 2019
That plan will cost a lot of money, which is one of the reasons why it will not go ahead. But there will be no famine. You should not overestimate the Netherlands either.
Henk de Jong 13 September 2019
Fortunately, Mr. de Groot's figures are simply unrealistic!
Jan Henk Lefers 22 September 2019
Beautiful piece!!
Make sure it's in a national newspaper this week!
margin 23 September 2019
Good piece......but why do I almost never read these kinds of articles in newspapers and only in professional literature ???????
cagri 23 September 2019
Nice piece, just the same here in Belgium, I think all over western Europe by the way. It's just been too long since people went hungry and the generation that has experienced this has almost completely disappeared. Exploring the science?? The bioengineers who graduate today are already completely anti-farmer in education, I can predict their "research results" for you.
flap 24 September 2019
I don't understand either!! lto also only posts against messages in its own field of literature. citizens should read this! if you can't make it to the newspaper, do it in municipal newspapers. please try to reach the people!!!! they only read the fake bad news.. it's already too late anyway...
