Are we going too far in the number of milk flows?

23 July 2019 - Hans de Bie - 7 comments

We have a highly organized dairy column in the Netherlands, with a good logistics system. In the Netherlands we are also able to serve every market in the world and we also do that 'just in time'.

The latter is especially important for trade. In addition, Dutch dairy products are known for their very high quality, which is important in the context of food safety. These are important matters and together they form the distinctive character of the Dutch dairy column.

At the moment there is a clear emergence of different dairy flows. The organic milk flow is the best known form. This milk flow has been around the longest, has a specific target group in the market and is still growing. In addition, we see that recently there has also been an increase in the emergence of other dairy flows, such as VLOG milk, PlanetProof, the AH concept and Beter Leven.

Do not write off bulk flows
In my view, this is a positive development, because the extra efforts of the dairy farmers are actually rewarded in the selling price. However, it depends on the individual situation whether you actually improve in income. In my opinion, a start has now been made, but this development will have to develop further before the additional yield of the dairy flow does sufficient justice to the extra efforts and costs of the dairy farmers.

We must, incidentally, be vigilant that it is not only about the specific dairy flows, nor should we think that (only) the future lies there. We often forget to look at the 'mainstream' of bulk processing, while the Netherlands is an important player in the global export market in that area. I therefore think that we should definitely keep a close eye on the further development and optimal marketing of this bulk flow. This is because in the Netherlands we certainly have something to gain in terms of the cost price level of bulk products compared to the rest of the world.

This is in response to it Boerenbusiness article:

The Council of Members at RFC is so dirty that they play members off against each other! They steal milk money from one member and distribute it to the other member in the form of different milk streams . The same applies with 1 euro per 100 kg less milk next year, drivers would do this to get a performance bonus, in other words to get their own salary up. Again money from the individual member to finance all these silly, only the citizen is NOT waiting for this, they want a nice healthy product for little money. So low cost price and what does the Members' Council do in collaboration with the Board to keep increasing the cost price for the members. It is time for RFC in Amersfoort to start working harder itself instead of burdening the members with a higher cost price. And as far as the members' council is concerned, you should think again if even more members stop or switch and the other members have to pay them out whether it is not wiser to keep as many members as possible on board instead of structurally phasing out certain members, such as group farmers / thrift shop obligations etc...,!,

It stops with time, the members are tired of shit! More and more for equal or less. I fit for that

FC has been saying for years that they are having trouble marketing "bulk milk". The market demands milk with "extra". And what do many members do: we bet on bulk, we find that easy! Showing off a large stable, rooster behavior par excellence!

@pieter The consumer is asking for a "tasty, healthy, cheap product" without nonsense!!!!! and as far as bulk is concerned, RFC already has less milk to process than the end milk quota. Who is going to pay out the(about) stoppers, YOU? or, all members? or from the bonus of the drivers who shouted in 2015 "RFC is going to process all the extra milk"? or the council? It's time for RFC-amersfoort to work a little harder I think ALL Members, big or small, work hard enough and that the ball is in AMERSFOORT, directors and members' council!!!!!!!!! and otherwise lay off staff, if they don't work, what they get paid for...... get!

@peter, have you already contacted the members' council? And if so what is their response?
Peter 23 July 2019
@ Pieter : If you don't like it, stop! Is their reaction. I think these people are sad they are so far away from most members it's a shame they are "top down" controlled / abused by the board only they don't want to see it, because they need the coals too much. I am ashamed of such a council of members that saddles us with more and more rules and obligations and less and less milk money. There are enough members who indicate at meetings that obligations are enough and they just carry on with it. We are treated by our own cooperative as criminals, if our ancestors were crazy, they did not have all these strict obligations / extra work provisions and the milk was also drunk and marketed at a much better price than now. The civil service within the cooperative is far too expensive , this has also been raised several times at meetings of the Members Council . In my view, the current Members' Council is no longer representative!!!!!!

Indeed, there are still nice cost savings to be achieved for bulk products, by producing and feeding more and better grass instead of concentrate, see www.smartgrassproduction.nl and by robotizing fertilization, for example. More about this on Friday 29 November 2019 during the Day of Precision Fertilization in Wageningen, see www.smartfertilizationday.nl
