School youth demonstrate, agriculture act

6 February 2019 - Herre Bartlema - 10 comments

Students from all over the country will travel to The Hague on Thursday 7 February to jointly express their concern about global warming. The initiative is a result of original thinking in combination with copying behaviour.

Original thinking and copying are things that educators can enjoy every day, but so are policy makers and the public in our center of government. The demonstrating students fear that the measures needed to save the climate are being taken too late. That is why they urge urgency in climate policy.

Press the boiler
Many adults share the fears of students. It is a large program in which many parties are involved. Experience also shows that the implementation of large projects takes a lot of time: an example is the North/South line in Amsterdam. That's why, if it's up to me, pressure on the kettle won't hurt.

The agricultural sector need not feel addressed in the matter. The entrepreneurs in our sector have become well aware of the urgency of the problem (due to the erratic course of the growing seasons in recent decades). After the 'Clean and Efficient Agrosectors Sector Covenant' in 2008 (more than 10 years ago), much has been done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Fertilizer reduction
The most striking, and at the same time the most effective development, concerns the reduction in the use of nitrogen fertilizers. This is a reduction of more than 50% compared to the reference year 1990. If this trend continues, combined with the 50% reduction in concentrate consumption in dairy farming, the sector will easily be able to reduce the emission of 3,5 million tons of CO2 per year, as provided for in the climate agreement.

Reports in the trade press provide proof of this progress almost every day, mainly through making Dutch agricultural companies more sustainable. The interest in the certification program 'On the way to PlanetProof' on the part of dairy farming is a recent example of this.

Don't talk, just brush
The best proof will be delivered on Thursday 7 February. Then not in The Hague, but in Nijkerk. Information is given there all day long about the best agricultural practices for circular agriculture in dairy farming. In the morning, precision fertilization, modern grass cultivation and soil pressure reduction are discussed.

In the afternoon, the Grass and Fodder Fertilization Committee will present the latest fertilization recommendations for extracting as much top-quality roughage as possible. School youth demonstrate for it, the agricultural sector is working on it. Don't talk, just brush. The sector does what it promises.

This is in response to it Boerenbusiness article:

And that's where it goes wrong! Where is the biodiversity? Precision fertilization, how do you get as much good grass as possible from the land? But when I look around, I only see monocultures in agriculture. How are we going to get Jan with the hat to pay a little more for their food and drink so that agriculture can make a serious switch to sustainable!

Yes, we all want a better climate, but someone else has to do it and pay for it. That is the thinking of most people and children certainly do not know how the world works.
The earth has been warming up for 10000 years and the gledges are still melting and the sea level has also been rising for 10000 years!!
CO2 is super stuff because it grows well, this gas always sinks to the bottom because it is heavier than air and the plant can always reach it. Nature is not crazy because it has been working on this for billions of years!
If the plant grows faster, it evaporates more and evaporation is cooling, very simple.
The sun may also be a major unpredictable, ice ages and warm period have been there and will continue to come.
If something needs to be done, then use more wood in materials or construction because this is all CO2 that is stored for a longer period of time, because forestry and agriculture are the only ones that can store CO2 and should therefore be rewarded.
Industries and producers should not be taxed, but the people who buy the product should pay for it. After all , production is not just for fun .
We are here on planet earth and have no function in the system.
We can't do without the earth, but the earth can do without us!!!

@vrij Grof mentions in the penultimate paragraph:

Industries and producers should not be taxed, but the people who buy the product should pay for it. After all , production is not just for fun .

that's exactly how it is. CO2 is also not produced for fun.
If there is to be a CO2 tax, it should be comparable to the turnover tax, whereby the end user also ultimately pays this tax. The end user can therefore opt for another (perhaps cheaper) product that contains less CO2 tax.
unfortunately, politicians do not dare to put the price on the consumer

@free coarse. That's right, you mention processes that are influenced much more than by CO2.... and are beyond our control.
But believing climate lemmings (politicians, a large part of career-hungry scientists, the media and now also the TeeVee indoctrinated students) parrot / bleep about CO2 as the culprit in climate change.
The multi-billion dollar fight, enforced by global socialist accords, will be of little use. Soon we will be forced to invest in this outrageous nonsense.
No, I am not a denier of climate change, which is always a factor, but I do deny the role attributed to CO2 compared to other factors. The Earth system really knows how to handle the CO2 otherwise it would have gotten out of hand much earlier, partly due to the melting permafrost.
One mister Rotmans (elsewhere in this edition) also keeps calling out this story. Whether he understands it himself I do not know, he does not base his claims other than parroting the same song. soil life? yes, please, biodiversity, yes, please. less use of resources, yes, please, but don't come up with CO2 fallacies.

"If something needs to be done, then use more wood in materials or construction because this is all CO2 that is stored for a longer period of time, because forestry and agriculture are the only ones that can store CO2 and should therefore be rewarded.
Industries and producers should not be taxed, but the people who buy the product should pay full for this." That means that if you buy CO2 binding material you should be rewarded? Vegetable food, meat, wood, all bound CO2, so soon it will be free (because you contribute to a positive environment) build wooden houses, then eat meat and vegetables in that house!I think we already do that. Only we still have to pay for those products. The question is then only from which CO2 will the next tree, vegetable or animal feed grow after that (50 years or so). the climate deal has helped bring down CO2% in the air is that the plan?

Yes Joop, but that meat you eat has already emitted a lot of CO2 for that. With every breath alone, 130x as much CO2 comes out as is inhaled and humans also participate in that.
If we are going to use wood, we first need a tree.
They also have to be planted again, so production forests are simply necessary.
When I talk about capturing CO2, I mean (unfortunately) the vegetable sector, only it knows how to convert CO2 into oxygen and is therefore so important for life on earth and that is why a plant will grow faster with increased CO2 to reduce the CO2 level in the air.
Let's take a look at the permavrost, those are plant remains that will rot. How do they actually get there?
Humans think that we can change things in 1 generation, well no, the earth and its system arrange that themselves.
1 big volcano eruption or something like that. Sometimes changes much more than humans can do in 1 generation. And then the planet will recover. Okay, you might have to be patient for 100 or 1000 years and that's where the problem lies for us.

If the bureau knights want extra forest, they can get me involved, for a nice fixed fee I will plant trees as much as they want (it doesn't help but who cares, enough tax dollars).
Buy extra land on the other side of the ocean, farming is the way it should be there.

But that's the problem now, the government doesn't like making money from it! And they never will.
Austrian farmers do receive money for co2 storage in the soil and, as I understand it, also a reasonable amount.
Nice isn't it 1 Europe.
Indeed, moving is not so bad after all.
They allow school children to rule here who smoke, ride 2 tact scooters, preferably a dozen times on holiday, want to go as far as possible, preferably work as little as possible or regularly go to the riding school and Mc Donnalds and also very quickly screw up their clothes because it is going out of fashion .
During their cheap flight holiday, they grumble that the jacousie is too cold.

Is it the school children or the parents of these school children who offer them the opportunity for everything?

The initiative now clearly lies with children.
As a parent, I look at it more soberly.
